4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
BEng Computer Systems Engineering with an Industrial Placement Year at University of Sheffield
This four-year BEng blends core knowledge in computing, embedded systems, control theory, and robotics with the invaluable experience of a full year in industry, equipping you to design smart, robust systems that cross software and hardware boundaries. It’s tailored for hands-on learners who are eager to work on real-world challenges and launch their careers with confidence.
Curriculum Structure
First Year
You’ll build a solid grounding in electro-mechanical systems, exploring core mathematical and computing concepts while working collaboratively on real-world design challenges. Expect to dive into units like Introduction to Electric and Electronic Circuits, Introduction to Systems Engineering & Software, and Modelling, Analysis and Control, where you’ll learn circuit fundamentals, C programming, control theory, and MATLAB simulations.
Second Year
Your skills will evolve through programming in Python, Java, and C++; you’ll also take on Control Systems Design and Analysis, Mechatronics, and Signals, Systems, and Communications. These units cover feedback control theory, mechatronic system design, sensor integration, and communication systems—rounded off with practical projects and employability workshops like Engineering – You’re Hired.
Industrial Placement Year
Between 2nd and Final year, it's all about real-world application: you’ll spend a full year working in industry—bringing your academic knowledge to life with companies like ARM, Siemens, or Boeing while developing professional skills, building networks, and significantly boosting your employability
Third Year
You’ll consolidate your expertise with a major Individual Project, while also exploring Systems Design and Security (covering software lifecycles, verification, and cybersecurity), Digital Signal Processing, Intelligent Systems, and advanced optional modules such as Machine Learning, Robotics, IoT, or Design of Medical Devices. These options let you tailor your final year to your interests and career goals.
Focus Areas
Systems engineering, embedded and digital systems, control and mechatronics, intelligent systems, cybersecurity, software-hardware integration.
Learning Outcomes
Develop strong problem-solving and programming skills (C, Python, Java, C++), master systems modelling, control and mechatronics, understand software security and systems design, and gain hands-on experience through individual research projects and industrial-style challenges.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
This degree is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC), and the Engineering Council UK, meeting professional standards for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status—and paving the way to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with further learning.
Reputation (Employability Rankings)
An impressive 90% of graduates are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating, with alumni employed by Rolls-Royce, Siemens, Airbus, and more. The University of Sheffield stands out nationally: #1 in the Russell Group for student satisfaction (NSS 2024), has research rated 92% world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021)
At Sheffield, the Computer Systems Engineering degree is built around getting your hands immersed in real, technical work from the outset.
