3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering (with Foundation Year) at LSBU is designed to provide a comprehensive pathway into the field of electrical and electronic engineering. This program is particularly suited for students who may not meet the direct entry requirements for the standard BEng course. The foundation year focuses on developing essential academic, study, and practical skills, including core engineering modules, mathematics, engineering science, and scientific principles. This prepares students for progression into the full BEng course offered by the Division of Engineering.
Curriculum Structure
Foundation Year
In the foundation year, students engage in a combination of core engineering modules associated with the provision of study and laboratory skills, mathematics, engineering science, and scientific principles. This year aims to develop academic, study, and practical skills needed at the foundation level, enabling students to progress to BSc and BEng courses offered by the Division of Engineering.
Year 1
You’ll begin by mastering essentials in Engineering Mathematics and Modelling, Electrical Circuit Analysis, Digital Logic Design, Electronic Principles, and Design and Practice—diving into circuit behavior, logic systems with FPGAs, semiconductor theory, and design-centered teamwork. These modules are built around "design-make-test" projects from day one, giving you early experience applying what you learn.
Year 2
The second year challenges you with advanced coursework: Advanced Engineering Mathematics and Modelling, Circuits, Signals and Systems (supported with MATLAB/SIMULINK lab work), Analogue Electronics, Embedded Software Design (Arduino-based prototyping in C/C++), and a Professional Practice & Team Design Project. It's a creative mix of modeling, analogue circuit work, embedded systems, and structured teamwork to sharpen your real-world engineering mindset.
Year 3 (Optional Placement Year)
This program includes an optional placement year between Years 2 and 4—giving you the opportunity to work in industry, develop professional skills, and enhance your employability before returning to complete your degree.
Final Year (Year 4)
Your final year offers cutting-edge topics like Renewable Energy Engineering, Communication Systems and Wireless Technologies, along with your independent BEng Project, where you define, design, and deliver a major engineering solution. This pulls all your learning together and lets you specialize in real-world systems and innovation.
Focus Areas
Engineering mathematics and modeling; electrical circuits and logic design; analogue electronics; embedded systems programming; renewable energy; wireless communications; team-based engineering design; independent project delivery
Learning Outcomes
Build strong technical expertise in electronics, control, and energy systems; develop embedded systems and software skills; experience working in multidisciplinary teams; optionally gain real-world work insight through placement; and complete a hands-on engineering project that showcases your skills.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
This course is fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)—covering the academic foundation for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status and contributing toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) accreditation with further experience. Moreover, you receive student membership in IET automatically upon enrolment, offering access to a vast professional network.
Reputation (Employability & Facilities)
From day one studying London South Bank University's BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering, you'll step into a learning environment that thrives on hands-on exploration. Instead of lecturing you into theory, LSBU places you in real tools, real machines, and real engineering challenges—designed to turn knowledge into practical skills fast.
Transitioning into the standout experiential elements of this program:
Advanced specialist laboratories & tools:
You’ll study in labs tailored for Control & Robotics (open and closed-loop systems, robotics applications), Hardware–Software Interfacing (circuit design via Multi-Sim and CAE systems), Analogue & Digital Electronics, and Telecommunications & Networking—with access to fibre optic and RF tech and Cisco networking gear. There’s also an Electronics Project Room providing workspace, specialist tools, testing equipment, and reference materials for electronics projects.
Leading software platforms & certifications:
You'll use powerful platforms like LabVIEW for graphical system design, MATLAB for simulation and signal analysis, and build skills in C++. LSBU also offers Cisco certification tracks and Microsoft certification courses (at reduced rates) to boost your professional profile.
Real-world project environments:
The Electronics Project Room gives you a dedicated, supported space to prototype and test your own devices—emphasizing applied learning from concept to finished product.
Industrial placement year options:
You can extend your degree with a 4-year sandwich option, spending your third year in industry. The university supports this with supervision and organized visits to ensure your learning continues firmly in professional settings.
Employability & career development support:
LSBU’s Employability Service helps you with everything from CV and interview prep to placement searches—available to you throughout your studies and for two years after graduation.
Professional accreditation & guidance:
The course includes IET student membership, giving you early access to professional resources and networking. An Industrial Advisory Board—composed of engineers and alumni—actively shapes the curriculum to stay aligned with industry needs.
Graduates of London South Bank University's BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering are highly employable, moving into roles such as electrical design engineer, electronics systems developer, power distribution specialist, control systems engineer and telecommunications analyst. Many alumni also pursue further study in smart energy systems, robotics or related fields, or work in sectors including power generation, transport infrastructure, manufacturing and building services.
