4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The BEng in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) at the University of Aberdeen immerses you in a dynamic world of digital circuits, robotics, photonics, and advanced power systems—ideal for students who want to shape the technologies that power our future. With hands-on lab work and expert teaching, you’ll gain a foundation in both general and specialized engineering from day one.
Curriculum structure
Year 1
In your first year you’ll explore a broad foundation of engineering subjects—delving into Engineering Mathematics 1, Principles of Electronics, Fundamentals of Engineering Mechanics, Fundamentals of Engineering Materials, Circuit Analysis and Design, and CAD and Communication in Engineering Practice. These modules introduce you to everything from differential calculus, dc circuit analysis, engineering drawing with SolidWorks, to the properties of materials and essential engineering principles.
Year 2
Year two extends your breadth with courses such as Engineering Mathematics 2, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Design and Computing in Engineering Practice (including MATLAB programming and CAD), Process Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Systems, and Electronic Systems. You'll model mechanical and electrical systems, work with digital logic and embedded microcontrollers, and learn control loops and thermodynamics—bridging theory with real-world design applications.
Year 3
In your third year you start to specialise, building on core theory with Control Systems, Signals, Systems & Signal Processing, C / C++ Programming, Communications Engineering 1, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Design, and Electrical Power Engineering. You’ll analyse dynamic system behavior, write structured code, dive into signal filtering, communication networks, embedded system design, and power conversion technologies.
Year 4
Your final year culminates in an ambitious, hands-on project—whether it’s an Individual Project, an Industrial Individual Project, or studying Abroad—combined with core advanced modules: Sensing and Instrumentation, Electrical Machines and Drives, Computer and Software Engineering, Communications Engineering 2, and a Group Design Project. This immersive capstone experience prepares you for industry challenges and lets you shine on a significant engineering deliverable.
Focus areas:
Digital and analog electronics; control systems; embedded systems and programming; signal processing and communications; power systems and instrumentation.
Learning outcomes:
Graduates learn to model, design, simulate, and analyse electrical and electronic systems—from control circuits to embedded programming and power machinery—while developing CAD, project management, and team collaboration skills through practical laboratory and project-based work.
Professional alignment (accreditation):
This BEng programme is accredited by the Engineering Council and counts as a route toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) (Educational requirements met for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially for CEng).
Reputation (employability rankings):
The University of Aberdeen ranks 8th in the UK for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, according to the Complete University Guide 2020. Engineering (General) at Aberdeen ranks 12th in the UK and 1st in Scotland according to The Guardian 2021, reflecting strong performance in foundation engineering education.
From your very first year, you'll build real engineering skills through hands-on lab work, embedded systems, group design challenges, and interdisciplinary projects—all backed by high-end facilities and strong industry ties.
Experiential learning unfolds like this:
Hands-on labs & design modules from Day 1:
Year 1 includes lab-based work in Principles of Electronics and Electronic Systems, with embedded microcontrollers and logic circuit design—supported by simulation and hardware prototyping.
CAD, programming & manufacturing:
In Year 2, you learn MATLAB, SolidWorks CAD, and even machine-tool use through the Design and Computing in Engineering Practice module—building your engineering manufacturing and coding confidence.
Advanced system and signal projects:
Later years include modules like Control Systems, Signals, Systems & Signal Processing, C/C++ Programming, and Electrical & Electronics Engineering Design—each with embedded programming, sensor interfacing, and practical test rigs.
Group and individual capstone projects:
In Year 4, half your time goes toward an Individual Project (which you can do abroad or with industry), and there’s also a Group Design Project tied to real-world briefs, including project management and technical design.
Top-tier research labs & teaching facilities:
You’ll access facilities like satellite-communications testbeds (SALT), optics and laser labs (HOLOCAM, eHOLOCAM), Internet network testbeds, power systems labs with high-power DC rigs, and an AI/robotics/mechatronics suite with humanoid and swarm robots.
Industry integration and field exposure:
Guest lectures, field trips (e.g., SSE at Tealing sub-station), and the EEE student society’s Robotics League competition enrich your real-world understanding.
Professional accreditation and employability:
The programme is IET-accredited—a recognized step toward Chartered Engineer status—and the career prospects are strong with alumni working in roles like ROV Project Manager, Telecoms Software Engineer, Subsea Controls Engineer, and more.
Graduates of the University of Aberdeen's BEng Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) are highly employable, moving into roles such as power systems engineer, electronics design specialist, control systems engineer, telecommunications consultant, and embedded systems developer. Many alumni also pursue further study in engineering disciplines or work in sectors including energy, manufacturing, robotics, and emerging technologies.
Here's how Aberdeen specifically supports your future:
Career Services & Experiential Learning:
