Electronic and Computer Engineering BEng (Hons) at University of Nottingham
A three‑year, full‑time honours degree combining electronics, electrical engineering, and software systems design. In your first two years you follow the same core curriculum as other electrical and electronic programmes, with the option in year 3 to specialise in computing, communications, signal processing or embedded systems. Curriculum structure:
Year 1 includes Applied Electrical and Electronic Engineering Construction Project; Contemporary Engineering Themes A; Engineering Mathematics; Information & Systems; Introduction to Software Engineering and Programming; and Power & Energy.
Year 2 comprises Contemporary Engineering Themes B; Design and Implementation of Engineering Software; Electrical Energy Conditioning and Control; Electronic Processing and Communications; Electronic Systems Group Design Project; Modelling: Methods and Tools; and Software Development Group Design Project.
Year 3 (final year for BEng) offers compulsory modules such as Analogue Electronics, Professional Studies, Scalable Cross‑Platform Software Design and Third Year Project, along with optional choices including Applications of AI in EEE, Cybersecurity, Digital Communications, Embedded Computing, Mobile Technologies, Optical Networks, Robotics, Sensing Systems & Signal Processing, IT Infrastructure, and Power Networks among others.
Optional year in industry (Between 2nd and Final Year): This year is spent entirely in industry, where you apply your learning in real engineering environments and gain hands‑on experience working on projects. You remain registered with the University, maintain tutorial support, and your placement can lead to employment offers. If no placement is secured, you must transfer to the standard BEng route without the year in industry
Optional Study Abroad Year: The Year Abroad option lets eligible students spend their second academic year studying at Nottingham’s partner campuses in China or Malaysia, following exactly the same core and optional modules as the UK programme and taught in English; this provides cross-cultural experience while reinforcing your engineering skills.
