Program Overview
The Engineering Foundation Year at Huddersfield is your stepping stone into the world of engineering. It’s perfect if you want to strengthen your maths and science skills while getting hands-on experience in engineering before starting a full degree.
Curriculum structure
Year 0 (Foundation Year)
In your foundation year, you’ll build a solid base in mathematics with Foundation Mathematics, covering everything from algebra and trigonometry to calculus and matrices—skills that are vital for any engineering path.
Through Foundations of Engineering, you’ll explore the principles behind mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering, combining theory with practical experiments to see how things work in the real world.
Engineering Investigative Studies gives you a taste of real-world engineering projects, including electronics, CAD, and basic design and manufacturing techniques, helping you develop problem-solving skills from day one.
Finally, Communication and Research will help you confidently present ideas, write reports, and work effectively in teams—essential skills for both university and future careers.
(This is a one-year foundation stage designed to prepare you for an accredited BEng/BSc engineering degree.)
Focus areas
“Mathematics, engineering principles, electronics and mechanical design, CAD, communication and research skills”
Learning outcomes
“By the end of this year, you’ll have a solid understanding of maths and core engineering concepts, hands-on experience in electronics and design, and strong technical communication skills—all ready for your next step into an engineering degree.”
Professional alignment (accreditation)
While the foundation year itself isn’t accredited, it prepares you to enter accredited BEng/BSc programs at Huddersfield, like Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering.
Reputation (employability rankings)
Huddersfield is recognised for excellent teaching (Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework), and engineering graduates have gone on to work for top companies like Bentley Motors, Cummins, and Schneider Electric.
When you join the Engineering Foundation Year at Huddersfield, you’ll be doing more than just reading textbooks — you’ll be getting hands-on with real engineering tools and projects from the start.
