BEng Mechanical Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Aston University

Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering at Aston University aims to prepare students with a strong grounding in both technical knowledge and professional skills in mechanical engineering.

  • Year 1:
Students establish a strong foundation in the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, such as mechanics, materials science, mathematics, and computer-aided design (CAD).

  • Year 2:
The program proceeds to study thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, control systems, dynamics, and engineering analysis. Technical and analytical skills are further developed by students.

  • Year 3 (Optional Placement Year):
Aston offers an integrated placement year, enabling students to gain valuable real-world experience by working with leading engineering firms. This placement is a key feature, boosting employability and providing context for academic learning.

  • Year 4 (Final Year):
Advanced subjects such as autonomous systems, smart materials, and robotics are covered by students. A substantial piece of design work encourages students to utilize their cumulative knowledge to tackle difficult engineering problems, usually in collaboration with industrial engineering companies.

During the program, students work with industry-standard technology and tools, and leverage a syllabus that promotes creativity, project management, working in teams, and commercial awareness.
The program is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) to satisfy the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Lab Access & Equipment: Students have access to modern laboratories and advanced engineering equipment, supporting hands-on learning and experimentation.

  • Practical Project Modules & Capstone Projects: The program includes personal and team projects, major design projects, that foster both technical and interpersonal skills such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving.

  • Internship/Placement Year: The placement year, available as an option, is a unique feature that offers students industry experience and professional contacts.

  • Student Societies/Competition: There are possibilities to join engineering clubs, competitions, and start-ups, cultivating teamwork, creativity, and entrepreneurship skills.

  • Unique Selling Point (USP): Aston’s strong emphasis on practical experience, industry engagement, and professional development sets its graduates apart, preparing them for immediate impact in the engineering workforce.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Graduate Employment Rate: Its graduates in mechanical engineering are placed in the Top 15 in the UK for graduate employability, with median salaries of £40,200 five years after graduation.

  • Career Support: The university provides comprehensive career services, including job fairs, one-on-one guidance, CV workshops, and mock interviews, supporting students in their transition to employment.

  • Industry Links: Strong partnerships with engineering companies offer students networking opportunities, placements, and potential employment pathways.

  • Postgraduate Studies: Postgraduate study is an option, with students able to pursue MSc in Mechanical Engineering, MSc in Robotics, or an MBA in Engineering Management.

  • Accreditation Value: Accreditation by the IMechE assures that the program is in compliance with professional engineering status requirements, promoting graduates’ professional qualifications and international mobility.

  • Job Roles: Graduates are suitably qualified to work in engineering positions in the fields of aerospace, automotive, defence, energy, manufacturing, medical devices, oil and gas, and transport system engineering.
