MEng Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Aston University

Program Overview

The MEng Mechanical Engineering at Aston University is an IMechE-accredited, four or five-year program aimed at preparing students for a rewarding career in the engineering industry. The program integrates a sound grounding in principles of mechanical engineering with high-level project management, teamwork, commercial insight, and leadership skills. The structure of the course is as follows:

  • Year 1:
Core engineering science modules, such as Introduction to Engineering and Design, Prototyping and Development, Electronic Engineering Fundamentals, Engineering Science, Mathematical Modelling for Engineers, and Materials and Manufacturing, are studied by the students. Right from the beginning, students work on practical projects, usually in partnership with industry engineering companies.

  • Year 2:
The programme continues to study topics including Advanced Mathematical Modelling, Materials and Manufacture, Engineering Science, Thermal Fluid Science, User-orientated Design and Engineering, and Engineering for Industry. These topics extend technical skills and analysis capabilities.

  • Year 3 (Placement Year – Optional):
As an option, students can embark on an industrial placement of one year's duration, gaining experience and professional skills in actual engineering practice. The placement aims to enhance employability and relate academics to the workplace.

  • Year 4 (and 5 for the five-year route):
The final years focus on advanced topics such as Thermal Fluid Science, Advanced Dynamics and Control, Advanced Solid Mechanics and Finite Element Analysis, Engineering Design & the Environment, and Advanced Manufacturing. Students complete a major individual project and a group project, applying their accumulated knowledge to solve complex engineering problems. Optional modules include Sustainable Energy, Advanced CAD, and MEMS Applications and Design.

The program is assessed through a mix of written and oral exams, practical work-based competencies, reports, presentations, and portfolios

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Lab Access & Equipment: Students benefit from access to modern laboratories and industry-standard software and tools, engaging in hands-on learning from the first year.

  • Practical Modules & Capstone Projects: The course structure is very project-oriented, with the major projects usually done in partnership with industry, so students acquire practical problem-solving skills and technical ability.

  • Placement Year/Internship: The placement year, available as an option, is a valuable year of work experience, enabling students to transfer their learning to the workplace environment and establish a professional network of contacts.

  • Student Societies/Competitions: Encouragement is given to students to join engineering societies and national competitions, developing leadership, teamwork, and innovative spirit.

  • USP: Aston's industry connections, co-located placement opportunities, and focus on project-led, practice-based learning stand out in the MEng program, readying graduates to make a direct impact in their chosen careers.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Graduate Job Prospects: Aston's Mechanical Engineering graduates are in high demand, with the programme ranked in the top 10 in the UK and top 15 in graduate prospects. The average earnings of Aston engineers are among the best in the nation, indicating high employability.

  • Career Guidance: The institution provides extensive career services such as job fairs, customized guidance, CV preparation, and mock interviews to facilitate the employment transition of students.
