MEng Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Sheffield Hallam University

Program Overview

The MEng Mechanical Engineering course at Sheffield Hallam University is a four-year integrated master’s degree designed to give students an advanced and in-depth education in mechanical engineering. This program goes beyond the traditional bachelor’s level, combining core engineering knowledge with forward-thinking design and innovation skills. Whether you’re passionate about sustainable energy, robotics, or product design, this course will help you develop the expertise to tackle real-world engineering challenges across diverse industries.

Curriculum Structure
From the very beginning, the course provides a balance of theoretical learning and practical application. The foundation is built with core subjects such as mathematics, physics, materials science, and mechanics. As you progress, you'll explore modules in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, control systems, advanced manufacturing, and digital engineering. You’ll also take part in hands-on labs, work with industry-standard software, and contribute to group design projects that reflect current industry demands. In the final year, you’ll undertake a major individual project that allows you to research and solve a complex engineering problem—often aligned with real-world or industry-linked challenges.

Accreditation
The course is professionally accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which ensures it meets the high standards required for a future Chartered Engineer (CEng) pathway. This accreditation demonstrates the course’s quality and its relevance to current and emerging industry needs.

Campus Location
Sheffield Hallam is based in the vibrant city of Sheffield, a recognized hub for innovation and manufacturing in the UK. The university offers access to specialist engineering laboratories, 3D printing suites, CAD facilities, and testing equipment, all located within a purpose-built, modern engineering department.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The course places a strong focus on real-world experience and practical skills. Throughout your degree, you'll benefit from:

  • Industry placements with leading engineering firms across the UK and Europe, giving you exposure to the workplace and helping you build professional networks.

  • Project-based learning, where you’ll work on live briefs and solve engineering problems for real companies.

  • Opportunities to join engineering societies, take part in competitions such as Formula Student, and collaborate on innovative, student-led builds and prototypes.

  • Engagement with Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and other regional engineering leaders, where you can attend workshops and shadow professionals.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Sheffield Hallam provides strong career support through dedicated employability advisors who assist with:

  • Writing tailored CVs and cover letters

  • Practising interview skills

  • Preparing for technical assessments and assessment centres

  • Organising career fairs and company presentations on campus

Employability
Graduates from the MEng Mechanical Engineering course are well-positioned for a wide variety of roles in both established and emerging fields. You could work as a Mechanical Engineer, Design Engineer, Systems Engineer, R&D Specialist, or Automation Consultant. Employers that commonly hire from the program include Rolls-Royce, Siemens, JCB, Airbus, BAE Systems, and a growing number of sustainable technology startups.

Further Academic Progression
While the MEng is already a master’s-level qualification, some graduates go on to pursue specialized postgraduate research, such as a PhD in Robotics, Renewable Energy, or Advanced Manufacturing Systems. Others may branch into business or data fields by studying an MBA, or a master’s in AI and Systems Design.
