BEng Mechanical Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

Project-based learning

Our system of project-based learning integrates engineering science with practical projects. So, you’ll become comfortable and capable in tackling realistic, open-ended problems – which makes you a better engineer.

Professional skills focus

The course includes professional skills learning, which empowers you to take responsibility for your own development and become an independent learner. This includes areas such as developing communications skills, teamwork, and presentation skills, helping to create more employable engineers.

Personal tutorials

From day one, your personal tutor will be your regular point of contact for both pastoral and academic support throughout your studies. The small group academic tutorial system strengthens the student-tutor bond and helps you to develop as an independent learner.

Vibrant student and staff community

Our excellent ‘student voice’ is consistently recognised and rated highly in the National Student Survey (NSS). Students are encouraged to be involved and have a say in their own education and to work together with staff to improve their mechanical engineering programmes.

Specialist teaching facilities

'Learning by doing' is the reason The Diamond was built. Dedicated to engineering, with a focus on developing practical engineering skills, this is where you’ll apply the theory you learn in lectures – consolidating your understanding alongside students from other disciplines, and beyond the bounds of the curriculum.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The BEng Mechanical Engineering program at the University of Sheffield offers a robust experiential learning environment that integrates academic study with practical, real-world engineering experiences.

Project-Based Learning: From the outset, students engage in project-based learning that combines engineering science with practical projects. This approach helps students become adept at tackling realistic, open-ended problems, enhancing their problem-solving skills and making them better engineers.

Professional Skills Development: The curriculum includes a focus on professional skills, empowering students to take responsibility for their own development and become independent learners. This encompasses areas such as communication skills, teamwork, and presentation skills, all of which contribute to creating more employable engineers.

Industrial Placement Year: Students have the option to undertake a year-long industrial placement, working with real mechanical engineers in industry. This experience allows students to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting, putting their studies into context and improving their skills and employability.

Specialist Teaching Facilities: The university provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, such as The Diamond, which is dedicated to engineering and focuses on developing practical engineering skills. Here, students can apply theoretical knowledge learned in lectures, consolidating their understanding alongside students from other disciplines.
