Mechanical Engineering Renewables BEng

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Dundee

Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering (Renewables) at the University of Dundee combines fundamental principles in mechanical engineering with an advanced knowledge of renewable technology. The programme is specially designed to prepare students for a low-carbon economy, including the topics of wind energy, tidal power, solar technology, and sustainable systems.

  • Year 1:
The engineering fundamentals of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, CAD (Computer-Aided Design), mathematics, and engineering materials are introduced to students. These topics serve as the fundamental building blocks for subsequent study of mechanical systems and energy.

  • Year 2:
The students advance from a basic level by delving into renewable energy systems, advanced mechanics, control systems, and engineering software packages such as MATLAB and SolidWorks. A high value is put on blending theory with practicality.

  • Year 3 (Industry Placement - Optional):
Part of the programme includes the potential to do a 12-month industrial placement in the renewable engineering or energy industry. The students can use this valuable experience to work on actual problems, improve their professional contacts, and acquire project management, team working, and communication skills.

  • Year 4:
The final year focuses on specialised renewable energy technologies such as wind turbine systems, energy storage, smart grids, and life-cycle analysis. A major capstone project enables students to design and present a solution to a complex problem, typically in collaboration with industry or academic research initiatives.

The programme is industry consulted and accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and conforms to the education requirements of Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Lab Facilities & Equipment: The students are granted access to advanced facilities, such as energy labs, fluid dynamics laboratories, 3D printing facilities, and prototype-making workstations that are customized for both renewable and mechanical experiments.

  • Practical Modules & Capstone Projects: Real-world engineering projects are integrated into the curriculum—from turbine system designs to energy life cycle simulation—allowing students to apply theoretical concepts to practical solutions.

  • Internship/Placement Year: The career services of the university assist students in gaining industry placements with renewable energy firms, engineering firms, or environmental consultancies, making them career-ready.

  • Student Clubs/Competitions: Involvement in societies such as the Dundee Engineering Society, the Formula Student Team, and the sustainability challenges encourages teamwork and creativity.

  • Unique Selling Point (USP): The integration of mechanical engineering fundamentals with a direct application to the renewable energy industry, in combination with optional industry experience, sets students apart in a position to lead in green innovation.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Employment Rate of Graduates: High employability as a result of increasing demand for engineers in renewable and clean technology, most notably in Scotland and the UK's offshore industries.

  • Career Guidance: Dundee offers strong career development services such as engineering job fairs, CV reviews, mock interviewing, employer networking sessions, and personal coaching.

  • Industry Connections: Strong relationships with companies including Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), Vestas, Wood Group, and Siemens Gamesa offer placement and graduate opportunities.

  • Postgraduate Options: Graduates often progress into MSc in Renewable Energy Engineering, MSc in Sustainable Infrastructure, or PhD programs in Green Technology.

  • Accreditation Value: Accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the graduates are in the process of becoming Chartered Engineers (CEng) for greater global recognition and employability.

  • Career Paths: Grads find work as a renewable energy engineer, mechanical design engineer, offshore systems developer, energy systems planner, sustainable solutions consultant, or power plant performance analyst.
