The BEng (Hons) in Mechanical and Medical Engineering at Hull combines fundamental mechanical engineering principles and advanced medical engineering applications. The programme is developed in consultation with hospital clinicians and professional engineers, and the teaching is balanced to combine theoretical study with practical skills.
Year 1:
Fundamental concepts in medical engineering, design and mechanical engineering practice, thermodynamics, and engineering science are introduced by core modules.
Year 2:
The focus then turns to physiological measurement, mechanical engineering design, NHS medical engineering in practice, stress analysis, fluid mechanics, and materials and manufacture.
Year 3:
The students work on an individual project (Medical Engineering), and learn topics including finite element analysis, prosthetics and orthotics, biomaterials, artificial organs, and CAD/CAM for medical engineering.
The evaluation is conducted using a combination of written exams, practical assessments, coursework, presentations, and research projects.
The programme is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), and offers a direct route to the status of Chartered Engineer.
