MEng Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Experience

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

We were the first English institution to offer an engineering degree, and we have been leading the way since 1824!
One of the few most targeted colleges by major graduate employers (THE Graduate Market 2024), with good industry links.
Ranked fourth in the UK for Mechanical Engineering (QS World Rankings 2022).
You will learn at our world-class. £400m Home of Engineering and Materials, includes facilities like wind tunnels and laser laboratories.
This five-year study is identical to Mechanical Engineering MEng, but has a year out in industry (usually after Year 3 - students then return to complete Year 4), providing a highly sought-after competitive edge.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Industrial Placement Year

  • A distinguishing element of this program is the structured industrial placement year, which is normally completed after the third year of study. During this year, students work full-time for an engineering firm, obtaining practical experience on real-world projects. The placement is supervised by both the host organization and the institution to ensure academic and professional growth.

Design & Research Projects

  • Annual Design Projects: Each academic year, team-based design projects imitate real-world engineering issues, encouraging collaboration and problem-solving abilities.
  • Third-Year Individual Project: Students complete a large investigative project, generally incorporating scientific experiments and research, as required for professional registration.
  • Final-Year Group Design Project: In the fourth year, students work on a significant group project that combines knowledge from multiple disciplines to solve complex engineering challenges.

Laboratory and Practical Work

  • Throughout the program, students attend laboratory sessions and practical workshops to gain hands-on experience in topics such as dynamics, thermodynamics, and materials science. These seminars aim to strengthen theoretical knowledge through practical application.

Initiatives promoting interdisciplinary learning and social responsibility

  • Ethical Grand concerns: Students participate in interdisciplinary activities that address global concerns while developing social responsibility and ethical understanding.
  • University Living Lab: This initiative enables students to collaborate with external organizations on real-world sustainability projects, bringing engineering knowledge to societal concerns.
