Mechanical engineering is crucial in various sectors such as aerospace, manufacturing, healthcare, renewable energy, and Formula 1. Indeed, there is hardly anything in our everyday lives that remains untouched by advancements in mechanical engineering, from the vehicles we use to how our food is manufactured.
Alongside taught sessions, you will have access to outstanding research facilities for manufacturing, including robotics and 3D printing methods. You will also utilize your understanding in both individual and group project environments.
Mechanical and manufacturing engineering have a joint curriculum for the initial two years, during which you will study the basics of engineering science and design. During the third year, you will focus on specialized options in mechanical engineering.
Mechanical engineering is offered as either a BEng or an MEng program. If you opt for the BEng route, you could transfer to the MEng program after your second year, provided your performance satisfies the required standards.
This is a course lasting four years, and the third year offers opportunities for an industry placement.
The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering with an Industrial Year at the University of Nottingham combines theoretical knowledge with real-world industry exposure, providing students with a thorough experiential learning setting.
Industrial Placement Year: An essential part of the program involves a year-long industrial placement, during which students are employed and compensated by a host company while still being fully registered with the university. This arrangement enables students to utilize their academic knowledge in practical situations, cultivate industry-related skills, and acquire valuable perspectives in their selected profession. The university offers assistance via academic tutors and the Faculty Placement team, helping students maximize their experience during their year in industry.
Capstone Project: During their last year, students carry out a significant solo project, frequently working alongside research group members. This initiative centers on utilizing engineering concepts to address intricate issues, improving students' research and development abilities.
Nottingham Internship Scheme (NIS): In addition to the industrial placement, students may join the Nottingham Internship Scheme, which provides work experience options with small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), charities, and social organizations over the summer break. This program offers extra opportunities for students to acquire hands-on experience and improve their job prospects.

A Level - Applicants to degree programmes will usually be expected to have studied three subjects at A level. All conditional offers will ordinarily be made on the basis of three full A levels (some subjects are not included – please see our course pages). Where applicants are taking four A levels, conditional offers will usually only be based upon obtaining three grades (including any subject specific requirements). The grade achieved in the fourth subject may have significance when an applicant has narrowly failed to achieve the specified grades at A level.IELTS - If English isn't your first language, you will need to meet the relevant English language requirements. IELTS requirements are detailed on our course pages, though we also accept a variety of alternative qualifications. If you are an international student, you should also check our information about applying from specific countries. If you need extra support to meet the English language requirements for your academic course, you can attend a presessional course at the Centre for English Language Education (CELE). If you pass at the required level, you can progress directly to your academic programme without retaking IELTS.IB - Applicants to degree programmes should have studied either the full IB Diploma programme, or a minimum of three Higher Level certificates. Conditional offers will be made on the basis of either a total points requirement or three Higher Level certificates, with specified achievement in some Higher or Standard level subjects if appropriate.
