BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

London South Bank University

Program Overview

This course trains you in bridging the financial, legal, technical and managerial sides of construction projects — you’ll learn how to measure, budget, manage contracts, control costs and ensure value for money. It’s for students who like working with numbers, problem-solving in construction, and want a career that’s in demand with real responsibility from day one.

Curriculum Structure

While LSBU doesn’t publish every single module by year (some modules rotate), here’s how your learning is structured and evolves across the course, with examples of core modules and how they build up your skills.

Year 1

You’ll begin by getting strong fundamentals: construction technology, environmental science, legal/economic principles, and basics of measurement and documentation. Modules include Construction Technology and Structures, Building Services and Environmental Science, and Legal and Economic Context, among others. These prepare you to understand how buildings are built, how contracts are structured, how laws and economics affect construction.

Year 2

The second year is more specialised around quantity surveying itself — measurement, cost planning, tendering, documentation, and estimating become central. For example, Measurement 1 and Documentation, Building Economics, Cost Planning and Tender Process, Advanced Measurement etc. You’ll also be introduced to software like Cost-X and perhaps others used in estimation, to make you more job-ready.

Year 3 (or Year 4 if you take the sandwich / placement option)

In final year(s), everything comes together: you’ll do more complex modules that integrate your skills. Key modules include Contract Practice and Administration, Project Management, Management of the Firm, and a Quantity Surveying Project (a capstone project simulating real-world QS work). You’ll also have the option to do a work placement which gives you hands-on experience in industry.

Focus areas

“Measurement & Estimating; Cost Planning & Tendering; Contract Law & Administration; Construction Technology; Environmental & Building Performance; Project & Business Management; Professional Software and Practice.”

Learning outcomes

“Be able to produce detailed, accurate measurements and estimates; understand and apply cost planning and tendering processes; navigate legal, economic, procurement and contract contexts in construction; use construction technology effectively; manage projects and business aspects of surveying; enter the profession as a competent quantity surveyor and pursue chartered status.”

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The course is accredited by RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors). It also has accreditation by CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building). This means the degree meets the academic requirements required for graduate membership and for many roles in quantity surveying.

Reputation (employability rankings)

  • There is a shortage of qualified quantity surveyors in the UK, which means graduates are in demand.
  • Graduate salary data: Architecture, Building & Planning graduates (which includes quantity surveying) at LSBU have had a median graduate salary of about £37,200 in 2023.
  • LSBU reports that past graduates become quantity surveyors, estimators, commercial managers, construction project managers etc. Work placements and professional accreditation improve employability.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On this course you’ll do more than just attend lectures. You’ll be working with real industry tools (e.g. cost estimating software), doing site visits, engaging in work placements or apprenticeships, and being assessed through projects that mirror what quantity surveyors actually do in practice. You'll also encounter contract law, procurement, project evaluation and cost control tasks throughout. LSBU ensures that many modules require you to apply what you learn in realistic, professional settings — group work, estimating exercises, measurement & documentation, and managing cost in simulated scenarios.

Key Experiential Learning Components & Facilities

Here are the concrete features specific to LSBU’s Quantity Surveying degree:

  • Building Information Modelling (BIM) Centre
You will have access to LSBU’s BIM Centre, which supports innovation and collaboration, especially using software that integrates into cost estimating and project visualisation workflows.
  • Specialist Estimating Software
The course includes training on Cost-X and Cato ‒ tools used in industry for measurement, cost planning and estimation. These are not generic ones, but state-of-the-art, industry-standard tools.
  • Accreditation and Professional Recognition
The programme is accredited by RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) and CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building). That means what you learn matches what employers expect and helps you toward becoming a chartered quantity surveyor.
  • Work Placements & Apprenticeship Options
    You have options:
    • Full-time version (3 years) or sandwich version (4 years) which includes a placement year.
    • Also available as a Degree Apprenticeship option, combining paid work while studying.
  • Project-based Modules
Modules such as “Quantity Surveying Project” simulate real work: you’ll integrate what you have learned from technology, law, measurement, contract practice etc., into a realistic project environment.
  • Law, Contracts & Procurement Training
Expect dedicated modules on Construction Law, Contract Practice & Administration, Procurement and Management of Construction, etc. These are hands-on and often assessed via case studies, essays, and exam/work-course components.
  • Guest Lecturers & Industry Connections
LSBU brings in practitioners, contractors, and surveyors to give guest lectures, share case studies, and sometimes to set briefs or act as external assessors. This helps you see how theory translates into live work. =
  • Location & Field Visits
Being in London, LSBU leverages proximity to major construction and development projects. Students get to see real sites, meet with firms, and learn from what’s happening locally.
  • Library / Digital Resources
You’ll have access to digital and physical libraries, specialised databases, materials for cost data, precedent contracts, etc. Also support for software and digital skills via LSBU facilities.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of LSBU’s Quantity Surveying program often take on roles such as:

  • Graduate Quantity Surveyor
  • Cost Estimator or Cost Analyst
  • Commercial Manager in construction projects
  • Project Control / Contract Administrator

You’ll be equipped not just to enter the field, but to progress toward chartered status (e.g. RICS / CIOB) and take senior roles over time.
