BA (Hons) English

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Northampton

Program Overview

The English BA (Hons) course is designed with specific strands that enable students to build their knowledge over time and apply their skills across different stages. For instance, a strand called 'Rethinking Identities' raises questions about which authors are taught, with a particular focus on race and ethnicity. This theme is explored in various modules in the second and third year, allowing students to deepen their understanding of literary expression, representation and recognition across a broad range of texts.

Each strand has a specific focus, such as literary periods, perspectives, historical contexts, or types of writing and media in the digital age. However, there are meaningful connections between modules at each level, and skills are developed and applied across all strands. The course is designed to enhance employability, with an explicit focus on skills development and opportunities to demonstrate employability in each module.

The course offers a broad range of topics, including ecology and the environment, children's and young-adult writing, contemporary revisioning of Shakespeare, American literature and culture, gothic worlds, and digital culture. The final year allows students to pursue their own passions and interests by selecting a dissertation topic of their choice.

The English degree lecturers provide a close-knit learning environment, where students can receive academic and pastoral support from tutors who are passionate about literature.
