Global Politics and Language (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish) BA (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Birkbeck University of London

Program Overview

If you’re someone who loves exploring global issues but also wants to strengthen your ability to communicate across cultures, this degree gives you the best of both worlds. The BA Global Politics and Language lets you study international politics while developing fluency in a language of your choice — preparing you to understand, analyse and engage with global events through a wider cultural lens.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year lays the foundation for both strands of the programme. You’ll start with modules like Foundations of Social and Political Science and Introduction to Global Politics, where you build a solid understanding of political systems and global challenges. Alongside this, you begin structured language learning (French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish), focusing on core grammar, communication, and cultural context through beginner-level language modules.

Year 2

In the second year, your studies become more analytical, and your language skills grow more confident. You’ll explore how political decisions are shaped by data and evidence in Governing by Numbers, and examine state behaviour in International Relations and Foreign Policy. At the same time, your language studies progress to an intermediate level, helping you move from basic communication to expressing viewpoints, understanding media, and engaging with real cultural material.

Year 3

Your final year brings everything together at an advanced level. You’ll tackle modules such as Doing Political and Social Research or War and Modern Society, and choose higher-level options in politics or your language specialism. This is also where you can take on a dissertation or a major research project, giving you the chance to explore an issue you’re passionate about — and even apply your language skills to original research or translation work.

Focus areas (in a string):

Professional Alignment (accreditation)

This degree is awarded by the University of London and taught by Birkbeck’s respected Department of Politics, giving you a qualification that carries strong credibility with employers — especially for roles that value multilingual communication and global awareness.

Reputation (employability rankings)

Birkbeck is known for outstanding teaching in politics and international studies, and students benefit from its central London location, access to major political institutions, and strong graduate employability across government, international NGOs, diplomacy, research, and multilingual roles.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This degree is built around doing, exploring, and applying what you learn. Because politics and language go hand-in-hand in the real world, you’ll constantly switch between analysing global issues and practising how to communicate across cultures. Teaching happens through interactive seminars, small workshops, and hands-on language sessions — all supported by digital tools and the huge benefit of being right in the heart of London’s academic district. The combination of active learning and a rich city environment makes your experience feel practical, relevant and engaging every single week.

To give you a clear sense of what your learning journey looks like, here’s how you’ll build real-world skills throughout the programme:

  • Moodle virtual learning environment: Each module has its own space where you access materials, submit assignments, practise vocabulary or grammar, and join discussion forums — making your language and politics work more organised and interactive.

  • Lively seminars and group discussions: Classes encourage you to debate global issues, work through case studies in teams, present your ideas, and respond to others — much like you would in diplomatic or policy settings.

  • Dedicated language workshops: You’ll have structured sessions where you practise speaking, listening, reading and writing in your chosen language, often working with authentic cultural materials.

  • Evening teaching schedule: Since Birkbeck teaches in the evenings, you’ll have your daytime free to take part in internships, volunteering, or language practice around the city — a major advantage for building experience alongside your studies.

  • Access to central London resources: Being based in Bloomsbury means you’re surrounded by landmark libraries, cultural institutes and international organisations, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore politics and language in real contexts.

  • Research-led modules: Courses like Doing Political and Social Research allow you to design your own study, gather evidence, and present findings — skills directly useful for careers in policy, diplomacy, or social research.

  • Personal tutor and academic support: You’ll have a dedicated tutor to guide your progress, help you settle into university life, and support both your language development and political understanding.

Birkbeck supports you at every stage as you plan your next steps, and its strong reputation helps open doors. Here’s how your future success is shaped during and after your degree:

  • Careers & Enterprise support: You’ll have access to one-to-one career coaching, CV and interview preparation, employer networking events, and mentoring — all designed to help you transition smoothly from university to the workplace.

  • Strong graduate outcomes: Birkbeck consistently ranks among the top non-Russell Group universities for graduates earning over £30,000, reflecting strong long-term progression and career growth.

  • A degree with global credibility: Your qualification is awarded by the University of London, giving it long-term academic and professional recognition worldwide.

  • London advantage: Being based in Bloomsbury places you near embassies, government departments, think tanks, cultural institutes and NGOs — making internships, volunteering and professional networking far more accessible.

  • Skills employers value: You’ll graduate with strong research abilities, confident communication in a second language, cultural awareness, and the ability to analyse global events — all of which are highly transferable across sectors such as government, media, development, education and international organisations.
