BA Joint Hons Human Resource Management & Marketing

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Strathclyde

Program Overview

This programme gives you a dual focus: how to manage people well within organisations (HRM) and how to understand, plan, and execute marketing in a fast‐changing business environment. It suits you if you enjoy both working with people and understanding markets (consumer behaviour, communication, strategy) and want a degree that keeps your career options broad across management, HR, marketing or related fields.

Curriculum Structure

Here’s how things unfold year by year, including sample modules:

Year 1
In your first year, you’ll get a broad grounding in business disciplines, with core modules that introduce fundamental concepts in both HRM and marketing. For example, you will take Managing People (an HRM‐introductory class) and Introduction to Marketing & Entrepreneurship, plus the Management Development Programme (MDP) which builds skills like communication, decision‐making, team working, and gives exposure to real business challenges.

Year 2 & 3
From Year 2, you’ll start specialising more deeply in both of your subjects. In HRM you'll explore workplace behaviour (from psychological perspectives), recruitment & selection, training & development, equality & diversity. In Marketing you’ll study things like Understanding Consumers & Markets, Services & Retail Marketing in Year 2; then in Year 3 you do Marketing Communications in the Digital Age and Strategic Marketing in an International Context. You also continue with the MDP in these years, integrating real‐world cases and business problems.

Year 4 / Honours
Your final year gives you the opportunity to select specialist classes and deepen your expertise. In HRM, that could mean advanced topics in organisational behaviour, global HRM, and public sector employment relations. In Marketing, you will study brand value to firms and consumers, and take electives like International Business Management, Sports Marketing, Social Marketing (among others) depending on your interests. You may also do a dissertation/project in your area. There’s an option to study abroad in Year 3, which helps broaden your perspective.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From your very first year, Strathclyde ensures you’re not just learning theory but doing stuff that builds real skills. You’ll get to work on group-projects, live briefs, and consultancy-style work. There are guest lectures, competitions, and opportunities for internships or placements. The Business School has dedicated computer labs, support systems, and lots of external industry involvement to make sure what you’re learning is relevant and useful. Here are the specific opportunities and facilities you’ll use:

  • Management Development Programme (MDP):
Throughout Years 1-3, this is a core part of the degree. It helps you build key skills such as teamwork, communication, decision-making. You’ll work in groups, present to actual companies, receive feedback from real business leaders (e.g. Barclays, Deloitte, Procter & Gamble, EY).
  • Live briefs, projects & internships:
In third year, you can choose a pathway with an internship or placement, or work on live business consultancy projects with local SMEs. These aren’t hypothetical — you act almost like a consultant, solving real issues.
  • Competitions & societies:
CIM The Pitch: you tackle a live marketing brief from a major company.
Marketing Society Awards: essays, “Apprentice-style” days, plus prizes including paid internships.
HRM Society: connections with alumni and employers, discussions of real practice.
  • Software / digital tools & curriculum-relevant modules:
Modules include digital marketing communications (e.g. SEO, PPC, Google AdWords), marketing research (quant and qual methods), services & retail marketing (including online components). You’ll do individual and group coursework.
  • Computer labs & virtual labs:
Strathclyde Business School has dedicated computer labs (rooms equipped with up-to-date PCs with relevant software) plus virtual computer labs. So even from home you can access the required software environment.
  • Facilities for teaching & collaboration:
There are rooms for lectures, seminars, break-out/tutorial groups, plus physical spaces in the Business School for collaborative learning. Also, the University has a strong research-and-industry orientation: the Technology & Innovation Centre works on collaborative projects and houses flexible shared lab-spaces.
  • Study abroad / international exchange:
You have opportunities in Year 3 to study abroad (one or two semesters) at partner institutions around the world. That gives exposure to different markets, cultures — very useful for Marketing & HR contexts.
  • Assessment style:
Mix of individual and group coursework, presentations, unseen exams, and for joint Honours students a dissertation in one of your chosen subjects at final year.
