MEng Civil and Environmental Engineering

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Strathclyde

Program Overview

The University of Strathclyde, based in Glasgow, offers a five-year integrated Master of Engineering (MEng) in Civil and Environmental Engineering. This program blends civil engineering fundamentals with a strong focus on environmental sustainability, reflecting the urgent need for engineers who can design resilient infrastructure while tackling modern environmental challenges. Students develop a solid grounding in mathematics, physics, and engineering science, before advancing into specialist areas such as water resources, environmental protection, structural design, geotechnics, and transport systems. By the final year, students are not only technically skilled but also equipped with leadership qualities and problem-solving abilities expected from chartered engineers.

Curriculum Structure (Year by Year):

  • Year 1: Students are introduced to the foundations of civil and environmental engineering. Core topics include mathematics, mechanics, materials science, and introductory civil engineering principles. Emphasis is also placed on developing practical skills through design projects and laboratory work.

  • Year 2: The focus shifts to a deeper understanding of engineering analysis and applications. Students study areas such as fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, surveying, structural engineering, and environmental engineering concepts, alongside continued mathematical training.

  • Year 3: Students begin to specialise more within civil and environmental disciplines. Courses expand into transportation engineering, water and wastewater treatment, geotechnical engineering, and structural analysis. Practical design projects become more complex, allowing students to apply their technical learning to real-world contexts.

  • Year 4: Advanced technical modules are introduced, covering sustainable infrastructure, project management, environmental assessment, and advanced structural design. Students also undertake a significant individual research project, developing independent learning and problem-solving skills.

  • Year 5: The final year integrates knowledge from across the program into a capstone group design project, often working on industry-linked challenges. Students also engage in advanced modules in infrastructure resilience, environmental management, and professional engineering practice, preparing them to enter the profession at the level expected of chartered engineers.

Accreditation:
The program is fully accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), representing the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), and Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE). This ensures that the degree meets the requirements for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Campus Location:
The University of Strathclyde is located in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, giving students access to a vibrant, dynamic environment. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is housed within Strathclyde’s modern engineering complex, offering state-of-the-art laboratories, computing facilities, and collaborative project spaces.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Strathclyde places a strong emphasis on combining theory with practice, providing students with plenty of opportunities to apply their skills in real-world contexts:

  • Industrial Placements and Internships: Students are encouraged to take summer placements or year-long industry internships with major engineering firms such as Atkins, Arup, Balfour Beatty, Jacobs, and AECOM, gaining valuable work experience.

  • Research Opportunities: From Year 4 onwards, students can participate in departmental research projects, often linked to themes such as sustainable construction, climate resilience, and renewable energy integration.

  • Group Design Projects: Collaborative projects allow students to replicate professional engineering practice, working in multidisciplinary teams to solve complex design challenges.

  • Professional Skills Development: The program integrates training in leadership, communication, and project management, ensuring graduates are workplace-ready.

  • Global Opportunities: Strathclyde offers exchange programs with partner universities worldwide, giving students the chance to study abroad and broaden their perspective on global engineering challenges.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Career Support: Strathclyde’s Careers Service and the department itself provide tailored support including career guidance, CV and interview workshops, and employer networking events. Many leading engineering consultancies actively recruit Strathclyde graduates through campus visits and recruitment fairs.

  • Employability: Graduates of the MEng Civil and Environmental Engineering program are highly sought after in both the UK and international job markets. Typical roles include civil engineer, environmental engineer, water engineer, transport planner, project manager, and sustainability consultant. Alumni have gone on to work with top employers in construction, consultancy, and government agencies.

  • Further Academic Progression: While many graduates move directly into industry, others continue their studies at PhD level or pursue specialist MSc programs in areas such as Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Sustainable Infrastructure.
