BA Psychodynamic Practice

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

University of Essex offers the BA Psychodynamic Practice, a new undergraduate degree that integrates theory, self-reflection, and professional training in psychodynamic counselling and practice. The course is for those who wish to learn about human feelings, unconscious drives, and the effect of early life on personality and behaviour. The degree prepares students not only for professional careers as counsellors and therapists but also for deep personal change and critical self-awareness.

The programme is a three-year format that progresses systematically from a strong foundation in psychodynamic theory throughout the period of applied practice.

  • Year 1: There is an introduction to foundation to psychodynamic thought, e.g., Freud, object relations, and attachment theory. This is supported by introducing reflective practice and personal development, typically through group work and experiential learning. This is a year of establishing a grounding in theory and developing the capacity for self-reflection.

  • Year 2: The focus is on further exploration of psychodynamic concepts, including transference, countertransference, and the therapeutic alliance. Students begin applying these ideas in practice through supervised practice, case discussion, and other experiential activities. Ethical dilemmas and professional guidelines are also at the forefront of this stage.

  • Year 3: Integration and application are emphasized in the third year. Practice placements and enhanced supervision allow students to develop their counselling abilities while they debate existing debates and research in psychodynamic practice. Both academic sophistication and professional capability are given to graduates through this phase as they graduate.

Curriculum Structure:
The BA Psychodynamic Practice at Essex integrates academic learning, personal development, and clinical practice. Students will be exposed to:

  • Core Theoretical Modules – such as psychoanalysis, psychodynamic models, and applied counselling approaches.

  • Skills-Based Training – instruction in counselling and listening skills through role-play, practice classes, and live supervisions.

  • Personal Development Work – experiential group work, reflective journals, and self-awareness tasks.

  • Practice Placements – practice working directly with clients under supervision, applying psychodynamic approaches in real-life situations.

  • Research and Dissertation – an independent end-of-course project, allowing students to select a subject of professional and personal interest.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Essex, it's not just about books and lectures. The course encourages students to learn through experience:

  • Supervised Placements: From the second year, students work with clients under professional supervision, gaining confidence and real-world skills.

  • Personal Development Groups: Regular group meetings provide a safe space for discussing feelings, behaviors, and the impact of working with others.

  • Workshops and Guest Lectures: Guest lectures are guest therapists and counsellors who are visiting to talk on behalf of practice experience that links study at university and professional reality.

  • Community Engagement: Others choose to work with local agencies to develop extensive experience with a range of social and mental health environments.
