At Solent, learning goes far beyond the classroom. From your very first year, you’ll be putting theory into action — testing, training, analysing, and supporting real clients in professional facilities. Whether you’re measuring fitness performance, assessing body composition, or developing rehabilitation programmes, you’ll be working with the same tools and environments used by health and exercise professionals.
You’ll spend a lot of time in Solent’s specialist labs and gyms — including the sports and exercise physiology lab, biomechanics lab, and teaching gyms — where you’ll carry out fitness assessments, use advanced testing equipment like VO₂ max systems and motion analysis tools, and apply what you learn in real-life situations. And because this degree includes an industry placement year, you’ll also get the chance to work in a genuine health, fitness, or rehabilitation environment, building valuable experience and contacts before you even graduate.
Here’s how Solent makes sure your learning stays hands-on and practical:
Real-world projects: You’ll complete live client briefs, where you design, deliver, and evaluate exercise and nutrition programmes for real people — not just theoretical cases.
Specialist facilities: Train and test in Solent’s biomechanics and physiology labs, teaching gyms, sports therapy and rehab rooms, and the on-campus fitness studios.
Industry placement year: Take a full year to work in a professional setting such as a gym, sports clinic, or health centre — supported by Solent’s dedicated careers team.
Professional qualifications: Alongside your degree, you can earn recognised certifications in personal training, exercise referral, soft tissue therapy, and more.
Digital and research tools: You’ll use lab-based analysis equipment, performance-tracking software, and digital systems for data collection and client management.
Collaborative projects: Many assessments are group-based, including video submissions, blogs, and presentations, helping you build teamwork and communication skills.
Pathway options: Choose between a Fitness & Personal Training focus or a Health & Exercise Science route to tailor your experience and future career goals.
Supportive spaces: The modern Spark building and Solent Library provide flexible study areas, research support, and access to the latest scientific resources.
Every element of this course is designed to prepare you for life after university — giving you confidence, experience, and a professional edge in the health and fitness industry.
