Program Overview

This comprehensive three-year program equips students with the skills and knowledge to provide individualized, safe, and compassionate care to mothers and babies throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood. It is ideal for individuals passionate about making a difference in maternal and newborn health, combining academic theory with hands-on clinical placements.

Curriculum Structure:

In Year 1, students explore foundational subjects such as “Biology for Midwifery Practice,” “Introduction to Evidence-Informed Enquiry in Midwifery,” and “Introducing Newborn and Family Health,” developing core midwifery knowledge and initial clinical skills.

Year 2 focuses on advancing practice through modules like “Challenges to Newborn and Family Health,” “Contributing to Midwifery Practice,” and “Evidence-Based Midwifery Practice,” with emphasis on complex cases and additional care needs. In

Year 3, students deepen expertise with “Advocacy and Leadership in Midwifery Practice,” “Care and Systematic Assessment of the Newborn,” and a “Midwifery Research Project,” preparing them for professional autonomy and leadership.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery Studies program at the University of Huddersfield offers a rich experiential learning experience that integrates academic knowledge with extensive clinical practice. Students develop practical, real-world skills through clinical placements across various healthcare settings, supported by simulation labs and expert supervision, ensuring confidence and competence in midwifery care by graduation.

Experiential learning highlights include:

• 50% of course time is devoted to clinical placements in NHS partner Trusts, including midwife-led units, birth centres, labour wards, antenatal and postnatal care, community midwifery, and neonatal care.

• Completion of a minimum of 2,300 hours of clinical practice to meet Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards.

• Access to dedicated midwifery simulation labs equipped with birthing mannequins and relevant diagnostic tools for safe skills practice before live placements.

• Regular contact and feedback sessions with experienced Patient, Carer and Public Involvement (PCPI) participants, ensuring a patient-centred learning approach.

• Use of digital tools for reflective practice, portfolio development, and remote simulations to complement face-to-face learning.

• Active support and mentorship from clinical supervisors and academic tutors during placements.

Additional Information & Requirements

ABB at A Level including a Biological Science (Biology, Human Biology, Applied Human Biology, PE, Applied Science, Biomedical Science or Medical Science), or Social Science (Psychology, Sociology or Forensics), but excluding General Studies.
Indian Curriculum: For undergraduate courses: minimum XII 65%
American Curriculum Requirement: For entry into Year 1 in our programmes students must offer one of the following qualifications: US High School Diploma with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and one of the following: *SAT 1 with a minimum score of 1290 *3AP tests with minimum 4,4,3 Please note where the course has a subject specific entry requirement you will need to provide an AP or IB test score in that subject, at a minimum 4 in AP or 5 in IB (ideally at Higher Level) Our minimum entry requirements are the equivalent of A levels BBB or IB 30 points, with 5,5,5 in Higher Level Subjects.
IB Requirement: “128 UCAS tariff points from International Baccalaureate qualifications including a Biological Science at Higher Level at grade 6.”
GCSE: English Language or Literature and Maths at grade 4 or above (or grade C or above under previous scheme).
IELTS: The minimum for IELTS is 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, or equivalent. & TOEFL iBT: 87 overall (with Reading 22, Listening 21, Speaking 23, Writing 21)
