History and Politics MA (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Dundee

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by how past events shape today’s political decisions, Dundee’s MA (Hons) History & Politics is a perfect fit. This degree helps you explore how power, ideas, and societies have evolved across time — giving you the tools to understand the modern world through both historical insight and political analysis.

Curriculum Structure

Years 1 & 2:
You’ll begin by exploring key periods and themes in both history and politics. Modules such as Politics and Public Policy and History and Historians introduce you to the major political systems, historical debates, and research techniques. You’ll learn how evidence, ideology, and institutions shape our world, while also building critical thinking and essay-writing skills.

Year 3:
At this stage, you’ll dive deeper into specific areas of interest. You might study Modern Political Thought, International Relations, or History of Modern Europe, connecting historical developments with current political challenges. Small-group seminars and research projects encourage debate and allow you to start specialising in topics that inspire you most.

Year 4:
In your final year, you’ll have the freedom to pursue your own intellectual journey through advanced modules and an independent dissertation. Whether it’s examining Post-War Politics, Empire and Decolonisation, or Scottish Nationalism, you’ll apply everything you’ve learned to original research. This final year hones your ability to analyse, argue, and write with precision — key skills for both professional and academic success.

  • Political Simulations & Field Engagements: Some modules include EU politics simulations, policy workshops, or field projects where you work as a team to solve real political problems.

  • Primary Source Research: In history modules, you’ll analyse original letters, maps, recordings, and artefacts — developing the ability to interpret the past directly from its evidence.

  • Career & Internship Support: Dundee’s JobShop lists over 8,000 work and internship opportunities each year, and a subject-specific careers adviser helps tailor your applications and connect you with employers.
