Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by how past events shape today’s political decisions, this course is made for you. The BA Modern History and Politics at Essex lets you explore revolutions, wars, ideologies, global conflicts and political debates — all while developing strong analytical, writing and debating skills.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Foundations of History & Politics

Your first year introduces the major events and political ideas that shaped the modern world.
You’ll study modules like:

The Making of the Modern World 1789–1989 – covers revolutions, world wars and global power shifts.
Introduction to Politics – explores political ideologies, democracy, governments and global systems.

You’ll learn how to read historical sources, debate interpretations and write like a historian and political analyst.

Year 2 – Deepening Knowledge & Choosing Interests

In your second year, you start to specialise while building stronger research skills.
Core module:

Making Histories: Concepts, Themes and Sources (HR211) – teaches how historians interpret evidence, use archives and construct arguments.

Alongside this, you’ll take political modules and choose optional topics such as modern Europe, Cold War history, political thought, social movements or global conflict.

Year 3 – Study Abroad Experience

This year is all about taking your learning global. You’ll spend a full academic year at one of Essex’s partner universities overseas.

You continue your history/politics studies in a new culture.
Gain language skills, independence and international exposure.
This year counts towards your degree but doesn’t add extra time to your studies.

Final Year – Specialisation & Dissertation

In your final year, you return to Essex to specialise in topics you love — modern diplomacy, genocide studies, political violence, British foreign policy, etc.

You’ll complete a dissertation in either History or Politics, working closely with an academic supervisor on a topic you choose.
