History and Politics BA

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Nottingham

Program Overview

This joint degree brings together two powerful disciplines—History and Politics—to help you understand how the past shapes the present and the decisions that drive societies forward. It’s perfect for curious thinkers who love debating ideas, analysing evidence, and connecting historical insight with today’s global challenges.

 Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Your Foundation
Your first year introduces you to the key principles of political theory and historical investigation. Through modules such as Introduction to Political Theory, Understanding Global Politics, and Discovering History, you’ll explore how political ideas are formed, how governments operate, and how historians use evidence to uncover the stories behind major global events. You’ll also develop critical research and writing skills in Becoming a Historian 1.

Year 2 – Deepening Your Perspective
In the second year, you’ll bring history and politics together in History and Politics: A Problem or a Solution?—a module designed to help you think about how both subjects interact in shaping society. You can choose from a range of thematic modules, such as British Foreign Policy and the Origins of the World Wars or Environmental History: Nature and the Western World, allowing you to focus on topics that match your interests.

Year 3 – Specialisation and Research
Your final year is your chance to explore what fascinates you most. You’ll undertake a Dissertation or major Research Project, and choose from advanced topics in both history and politics. This year strengthens your independent research skills and prepares you for future academic or professional paths in analysis, communication, and leadership.
