BA Philosophy and Politics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

If you enjoy questioning ideas like truth, justice, freedom, and also care about how governments work and decisions are made, this course is the perfect mix of both worlds. BA Philosophy and Politics at Essex teaches you how to think deeply like a philosopher and act critically like a political analyst — ideal for students who love debate, ethics, and world affairs.

Curriculum Structure

 Year 1
Your first year introduces you to the foundations of philosophy and political theory. You’ll explore topics like Introduction to Political Theory, where you study power, democracy, and the state, alongside Introduction to Philosophy or European Philosophy, which covers thinkers like Kant, Nietzsche, and Descartes.

 Year 2
In the second year, you begin to combine both subjects more closely. You study modules like Contemporary Political Philosophy and Concepts in Political Science, where you analyse ideas such as justice, rights, morality, war, and political parties — and learn how philosophical thinking shapes real political systems.

 Year 3
Your final year is about specialising in what interests you most. You’ll choose advanced topics like Ethics, Global Justice, Human Rights, or Political Philosophy and complete a dissertation or research project that connects philosophy with real political challenges.
