Digital Media BA (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Birkbeck University of London

Program Overview

The BA Digital Media (Hons) gives you both the creative toolkit and critical insight to understand how digital technologies are shaping our world — from social media and AI to storytelling and platform culture. It’s ideal for students who want to blend hands-on creative skills such as video, web, or digital design with deeper theoretical thinking about media, society, and technology.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year builds a strong foundation in how media works. Core modules like Media Studies: Key Thinkers and Approaches and Working with Digital Media introduce you to key ideas about digital culture, platforms, and technology. You’ll also take Introduction to Digital Culture, a shared course that explores how digital environments shape communication, creativity, and identity — while giving you opportunities to experiment with digital tools and content creation.

Year 2

In your second year, the focus shifts toward specialization and contextual understanding. You’ll take modules such as Media, Technology and Culture, and depending on your chosen pathway, you can branch into subjects like Digital Marketing (for the Marketing pathway) or Business Information Systems (for those interested in Business Analytics). These modules help you explore the relationship between technology, society, and business, showing how digital systems and strategies work together in real-world contexts.

Year 3

Your final year is where everything comes together. Through the core module Researching Digitally, you’ll develop your own media research or project-based investigation. Alongside this, you can tailor your studies — for instance, through Communicating Digitally in the Creative Practice track or Brand Development and Marketing Strategy in the Marketing track. You’ll also complete a major final-year project that showcases your creative or analytical skills, giving you a professional portfolio piece to take into your career.
