Program Overview

The University of Derby offers a BA (Hons) Media and Communication, an exciting course that assists in equipping students with comprehensive understanding of media theory, communicative function skills, and narrative storytelling approaches. Year 2: Specialised skills and practical projects are the focus. Students study digital media production, social media communication, broadcasting, and public relations campaigns. Project work and collaborative projects encourage critical thinking and creativity in real life situations.

Year 3: The third year is concerned with professional and advanced media practices. Students undertake a dissertation or capstone project, allowing them to develop and produce a comprehensive media project or research investigation. Professional projects, internships, and industry placements offer the possibility of easier transition into one's chosen professions.

Curriculum Structure:

  • Core Media Studies: Media theory, communication models, journalism, and digital storytelling are included.

  • Practical Modules: Film production, photography, podcasting, social media, and content creation are practical courses offered.

  • Research and Analysis: Critical media analysis, audience studies, and research methods are focused on.

  • Final Project/Dissertation: Enables students to apply skills to a significant media project with both creative and analytical ability.
