Philosophy, Politics and Economics, BA (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Swansea University

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about understanding how ideas shape societies, how governments make decisions, and how economies drive change, Swansea’s BA Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) is the perfect choice. This interdisciplinary degree blends three powerful subjects to give you a deeper understanding of how the world works — preparing you for leadership roles in government, business, policy, or international organisations.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Strong Foundations
Your first year sets the stage by introducing you to the essential principles of all three disciplines. You’ll study modules like Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics to understand how markets function, and explore ideas about justice, morality, and society through Political Philosophy and Living Well and Doing Good – An Introduction to Ethics. Together, these modules give you a strong grounding in the systems, values, and forces that shape our world.

Year 2 – Expanding Knowledge and Perspective
In your second year, you’ll dive deeper into global issues and political thought. Modules such as Global Justice and Human Rights, The State and Political Institutions, and History of Political Thought encourage you to critically examine the principles behind governance and rights. You’ll also have the chance to explore optional topics like Globalisation or the Philosophy of Emotion, adding new dimensions to your understanding of politics and society.

Year 3 – Specialising and Applying Your Learning
Your final year is all about applying what you’ve learned and tailoring the degree to your interests. You’ll complete an independent Dissertation on a topic you’re passionate about, and choose from advanced modules like The Philosophy and Politics of Identity or British Parliamentary Studies. You can even spend a semester or full year abroad, gaining global experience and insight into how different political and economic systems operate.

Focus areas: philosophy, politics, economics, ethics, public policy, globalisation, political theory

Learning outcomes: develop critical thinking and ethical reasoning, understand how political and economic institutions work, conduct independent research, and communicate complex ideas clearly and confidently.

Professional alignment: While the degree isn’t tied to one specific professional body, it’s highly respected by employers in government, NGOs, policy organisations, consulting firms, and international institutions. You’ll also benefit from opportunities like internships with the Welsh Parliament (Senedd Cymru), helping you build practical experience and valuable connections.

Reputation: Swansea’s PPE degree is taught by top-ranked departments — Politics is ranked 4th in the UK for Student Satisfaction, and Economics is in the Top 20 for Student Satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2025). These strong rankings reflect Swansea’s commitment to high-quality teaching and excellent graduate outcomes.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Swansea, studying PPE isn’t just about learning from books — it’s about stepping into the real world of politics, economics, and policy-making. From your first year, you’ll be encouraged to put theory into practice through placements, field visits, collaborative projects, and hands-on research. These experiences not only deepen your understanding of the subjects but also help you graduate with the practical skills and confidence employers are looking for.

Here’s how Swansea turns learning into real-world experience:

  • Work with the Welsh Parliament: One of the highlights of the course is the chance to complete a placement with the Senedd Cymru (Welsh Parliament). You’ll spend time working directly with an Assembly Member, gaining firsthand insight into how political decisions are made and policies are shaped.

  • Year in Industry option: Choose the “with a Year in Industry” pathway and spend up to 12 months working in a relevant organisation. This is your chance to apply what you’ve learned, build a strong CV, and often earn a salary before you graduate.

  • Parliamentary studies and field visits: Through the British Parliamentary Studies module, you’ll be taught by experts alongside members of the UK House of Commons and House of Lords — and even visit Parliament in London to watch debates and political processes unfold.

  • Collaborative projects and presentations: Many of your assessments are designed to mirror real workplace challenges, including group projects, research-based coursework, and public speaking tasks — building teamwork and communication skills.

  • Study abroad opportunities: Add an international dimension to your degree by spending a semester at one of Swansea’s global partner universities. This is an excellent way to explore how different political and economic systems work around the world.

  • Specialist career support: Swansea’s dedicated Internships and Placements team will support you in finding relevant roles, preparing your applications, and making the most of work experience opportunities during your degree.

  • World-class facilities and resources: You’ll have access to Swansea’s extensive library and digital archives, cutting-edge research centres, and departmental support networks — all designed to enhance your studies and support independent research projects.
