We place a high value on practical application of skills in real-world situations as an essential component of nursing education. As a result, 50% of your study time will be spent on placement, allowing you to gain hands-on experience. During the program, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of severe and enduring mental health conditions, such as dual diagnosis, psychoses, child and adolescent mental health, and dementia.

In the first year, you will cover the primary scientific and biological foundations of mental health nursing, including anatomy and physiology, as well as core communication skills. You will also complete your first placement experience, which will be fully supported and prepared. The fundamentals of mental health and wellbeing will be introduced, and your professional learning will be placed in a personal and social context through the Expansive Learning module.

During the second year, you will begin to develop your mental health assessment and treatment skills. You will have the opportunity to apply interventions such as psychosocial and medication management skills in real-world settings.

In your final year, we will help prepare you for employment by equipping you with leadership and management skills. You will consolidate the knowledge and expertise you have gained over the last three years and be ready for job applications and interviews.

Nursing is becoming increasingly diverse and adaptable, providing mental health nurses with a wide range of employment opportunities. The skills required to be a successful mental health nurse are also transferrable to many other fields.

Mental health nurses can work with individuals of all ages, from children and adolescents to older adults requiring dementia care. They are in demand in secure facilities like prisons and specialized hospitals, as well as in specialist mental health wards, various community settings, and health settings such as GP surgeries and Emergency Departments in general hospitals.

There are many specialized roles for mental health nurses, including nurse prescribers, managers, and consultants. Mental health nurses are also involved in teaching, research, educational outreach, public health, and work with a range of employers from the voluntary sector to the Armed Forces. It is also possible to travel and work abroad as a mental health nurse, and some nurses even establish their own businesses. As nursing is a 24-hour profession, many nurses have flexible hours and shift patterns that may include early, late, night, weekend, and bank holiday working, enabling them to shape their career to meet their needs and aspirations with proper planning.
