Reputation (employability rankings)
In the National Student Survey 2023–24, 97% of students rated the teaching positively, with over 90% praising learning opportunities.
UWE graduates are highly valued by NHS employers thanks to the university’s close ties with ambulance services and strong emphasis on simulation-based, hands-on learning.
From the very start of the course, you’ll combine classroom learning with real-world clinical experience. You’ll spend around half of your time on placement, working directly with patients and healthcare professionals. Through a mix of simulation training, hospital and ambulance placements, and interprofessional teamwork, you’ll develop the confidence and technical expertise needed to thrive as a registered paramedic.
You’ll train in environments that mirror real emergencies, using advanced manikins, digital feedback systems, and paramedic-grade equipment. By graduation, you’ll be confident performing life-saving procedures, managing complex incidents, and working under pressure — exactly what’s expected of a modern paramedic.
Here’s how you’ll gain those skills:
Key Practical Components & Facilities
Extensive Clinical Placements:
Around 50% of the degree is spent in clinical practice — including emergency ambulance service placements and rotations through hospital departments such as Emergency, Theatres, Delivery Suites, and Coronary Care Units.
Realistic Simulation Training:
You’ll rehearse high-pressure emergency scenarios in UWE’s Skills and Simulation Centre, using advanced life-sized manikins that replicate trauma, cardiac arrest, and respiratory conditions.
Skills and Simulation Centre (Glenside Campus):
This purpose-built facility includes replica wards, children’s units, consultation rooms, and immersive simulation suites — allowing you to practise realistic patient assessments before entering the field.
Interprofessional Learning:
You’ll train alongside students from nursing, midwifery, and radiography, as well as emergency services such as Fire and Rescue and Hazardous Area Response Teams — building teamwork and communication skills essential for real incidents.
Specialist Module Training:
Modules focus on life sciences, trauma management, ECG interpretation, paediatric and elderly care, and advanced life support, supported by professional decision-making and leadership components in later years.
Mentorship and Feedback:
Every placement includes one-to-one supervision from qualified Paramedic Practice Educators. Many simulation sessions are recorded for guided feedback and performance reflection.
Glenside Health Campus Resources:
You’ll study at UWE’s dedicated health-professions campus, home to modern teaching facilities, healthcare libraries, and digital learning tools tailored for paramedic and nursing students.
After finishing this degree, you’ll be qualified to register as a Paramedic, enabling you to work in emergency and urgent care settings. From there, common roles include:
Emergency Paramedic (working with the NHS ambulance service)
Urgent / Primary Care Paramedic (dealing with urgent but non-life-threatening cases)
Specialist Paramedic (e.g. in paediatrics, critical care, trauma, or hazardous areas)
Leadership or Advanced Practitioner roles, or positions in training and education
