Program Overview

The University of Sheffield’s MBChB Medicine is a five-year programme that combines medical sciences, clinical skills and patient-centred learning, progressively preparing students for a career as a doctor. Students gain experience in real healthcare environments and develop their knowledge through patient contact, clinical placements and learning alongside healthcare professionals.

Programme Structure

Years 1–2: Students develop their foundations in medical science and clinical practice while beginning to apply their learning through patient-focused teaching and clinical experience.
Years 3–4: Students build their clinical knowledge and practical skills through a wider range of clinical settings, gaining experience with different patient groups, specialties and healthcare professionals.
Year 5: Students consolidate their medical and clinical skills and prepare for the transition into postgraduate medical training and professional practice.

Clinical Teaching Hospitals & Facilities

Students gain clinical experience across major healthcare settings in Sheffield, providing exposure to a broad range of specialties:

Royal Hallamshire Hospital — General medicine, infectious diseases, neurology and rheumatology.
Northern General Hospital — A major acute hospital and Major Trauma Centre, with exposure to emergency care, cardiology, surgery and critical care.
Jessop Wing — Specialist women’s hospital covering maternity, obstetrics and gynaecology.
Weston Park Cancer Centre — Specialist cancer care, including oncology and radiotherapy.
Charles Clifford Dental Hospital — Exposure to dental and oral healthcare within a wider healthcare environment.

Professional Alignment

The MBChB is a primary medical qualification designed to prepare graduates for registration and progression into postgraduate medical training, subject to the requirements of the relevant professional and regulatory bodies.

Sheffield places clinical experience at the heart of its Medicine programme, with students learning directly from patients and healthcare professionals in real clinical environments. The university emphasises exposure to a wide range of clinical settings, allowing students to develop practical skills alongside their academic knowledge.

Clinical Placements: Students gain hands-on experience in a range of clinical settings, applying their medical knowledge to real patient situations.

Anatomage Tables: Sheffield's Faculty of Health provides access to Anatomage tables, allowing students to explore the human body digitally and examine anatomical structures layer by layer.
Research Environment: Students study within the School of Medicine and Population Health, where research spans medicine and population health and supports a research-informed learning environment.
Multidisciplinary Learning: Exposure to healthcare professionals and different clinical environments helps students understand multidisciplinary working and develop effective teamwork.
Real Clinical Settings: The programme is designed around learning in authentic healthcare environments, giving students experience of how medical care is delivered rather than relying solely on classroom teaching.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Medical graduates in the UK follow a structured career progression pathway after completing their MBBS or equivalent degree. Upon graduation, they enter the Foundation Programme, a two-year paid training period (FY1 and FY2) where they rotate through various specialties to gain broad clinical experience. Successful completion of this leads to full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).

After Foundation Training, doctors choose a specialty and apply for Core or Specialty Training. Core Training typically lasts 2–3 years and is followed by higher Specialty Training, while some fields (like General Practice or Surgery) offer run-through training from the start. Specialty training durations vary—General Practice takes around 3 years, while hospital specialties can take 5–8+ years, depending on the discipline. After completing training, doctors become Consultants in hospital specialties or General Practitioners (GPs).

In terms of further study, many graduates pursue postgraduate qualifications to enhance their expertise or academic profile. Options include:

Master’s degrees (e.g., MSc in Public Health, Medical Education, Clinical Research, or Global Health)
PhDs or MD(Res) for careers in academia or research
Diplomas and Certificates in fields like Tropical Medicine, Radiology, or Dermatology
Intercalated BSc or MBPhD programmes (during or after undergraduate studies for research-focused pathways)

Additional Information & Requirements

A Level: AAA, including Chemistry or Biology and a second science, plus a pass in the practical element of any science A Levels taken. The second science can be Biology/Human Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics or Psychology.
Alternative EPQ offer: AAB + A in EPQ, including Chemistry or Biology at A and a second science. The EPQ and A Levels must be taken in the same sitting, and Sheffield requires the university to be the applicant's Firm choice.
IBDP: 36 points, with 6 in three Higher Level subjects including Chemistry or Biology and a second science, and no less than 4 in all Standard Level subjects.
GCSE: Five GCSEs at 7/A, with at least 6/B in Mathematics, English Language and a science subject. Sheffield accepts specified science subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics, Psychology and dual-award Science.
Indian: 85% overall in Standard XII, including 85% in Chemistry or Biology and another relevant science subject.
American - American: High School Diploma with GPA 3.0+, plus three APs at 5,5,5, including Chemistry or Biology and a second science. SAT scores are not considered.
IELTS: 7.5 overall, with a minimum of 7.0 in each component
UCAT Minimum threshold: 1800/2700 for 2027 entry. This is the eligibility threshold, not the interview cut-off. Once applicants meet the academic and UCAT thresholds, most applicants are ranked by UCAT score, with Home and Overseas applicants ranked separately.

SJT is reviewed only if the applicant reaches interview. It is converted to a score out of 5. There are 8 MMI sections + SJT, giving a total score out of 45. Applicants are ranked using the combined MMI + SJT score. Applicants scoring 3 or above in every MMI section and the SJT are prioritised.
