MBChB Medicine

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Aberdeen

Program Overview

The University of Aberdeen offers a five-year MBChB Medicine programme that combines medical sciences with clinical training through an integrated, systems-based curriculum. This approach ensures students gain a thorough understanding of the human body, both in health and in disease.

Programme Structure:

  • Year 1:
Covers the foundational medical sciences including anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, while introducing clinical skills and early patient interaction.

  • Years 2–3:
Focus on the structure and function of body systems, disease processes, and increasingly involve clinical placements to apply learning in real settings.

  • Years 4–5:
Emphasize clinical specialisms and include extended placements in hospitals and community practices. Year 5 prepares students for the transition into the Foundation Programme.

The University of Aberdeen School of Medicine and Dentistry offers a well-structured five-year MBChB program that blends early clinical exposure, a systems-based curriculum, and placements in both urban and rural healthcare environments. Based at the Foresterhill Health Campus—one of Europe’s largest integrated clinical, research, and teaching sites—students benefit from hands-on experience throughout their studies.

Core Teaching Hospitals

Medical students undertake clinical placements at a range of hospitals across Scotland, including:

  • Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
A major acute hospital and teaching facility offering a wide range of medical and surgical services.

  • Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital
Provides pediatric care and serves as a key site for training in child health.

  • Aberdeen Maternity Hospital
Specializes in maternity and women’s health services, supporting training in obstetrics and gynecology.

  • Woodend Hospital
Offers rehabilitation services and elective surgeries.

  • Royal Cornhill Hospital
A specialist hospital for mental health services and psychiatry training.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Intercalated Degree Options:
Students may take an additional year to earn a BSc (Hons) in Medical Sciences or Medical Humanities, broadening academic experience and career options.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) programme, known as BM5, is a five-year course designed to prepare students for a career in medicine by combining strong scientific foundations with early and sustained clinical experience.

Programme Highlights:

  • Integrated Curriculum:
The BM5 programme follows a modular structure that blends biomedical sciences with clinical practice from the early stages, enabling students to apply theoretical learning directly to patient care.

  • Early Clinical Exposure:
Students engage in early patient contact, including placements as healthcare support workers in Year 2, gaining real-world experience in multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

  • Research Opportunities:
In Year 3, students complete a 16-week supervised research project in a scientific or clinical field, encouraging the development of critical thinking and research skills.

  • Clinical Placements:
The programme features fewer but longer clinical attachments across a variety of medical specialties, offering immersive experiences and deeper clinical learning.

  • Optional Intercalation:
Between Years 3 and 4, students may opt for a one-year intercalated master’s degree in a related area, allowing for academic enrichment and specialization.
