MBBS Medicine

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Hull

Program Overview

Program Structure:

  • Phase I (Years 1–2):
Focus on problem-based learning (PBL), supported by early clinical placements, anatomy teaching, clinical and communication skills sessions, lectures, and workshops. Students begin developing practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge from the outset.

  • Phase II (Years 3–4):
Involves full-time clinical rotations across various specialties in both primary and secondary care. Students train in hospitals, community clinics, and general practice settings across the region.

  • Phase III (Year 5):
Prepares students for medical practice through advanced clinical placements. Includes a six-week elective, which can be undertaken in the UK or internationally.

Clinical Placements:

Clinical experience begins in Week 3 of Year 1. Students gain hands-on experience in both urban hospitals and rural healthcare settings, ensuring broad exposure to patient care and service delivery models.

Hull York Medical School (HYMS), a collaboration between the University of Hull and the University of York, offers its students a wide range of clinical placements across Yorkshire and the Humber. The program provides exposure to both urban and rural healthcare environments, allowing students to develop well-rounded clinical skills in diverse settings.

Core Hospital Partners in Hull

HYMS students undertake placements primarily within Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which includes:

  • Hull Royal Infirmary
A central teaching hospital offering acute services such as emergency medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, and trauma care.

  • Castle Hill Hospital
Located in Cottingham, this hospital houses specialized services including oncology, haematology, cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery through the Queen’s Centre for Oncology and the Centre for Cardiology.

These hospitals serve as key teaching sites, providing a wide range of clinical experiences in both general and specialist medicine.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Elective Period (Final Year):
Students complete a six-week elective in a clinical or research setting of their choice, either in the UK or internationally. This provides exposure to new healthcare environments, broadens clinical experience, and supports exploration of specific medical interests.

INSPIRE Programme:
HYMS participates in the national Wellcome Trust-funded INSPIRE programme, which promotes engagement in academic medicine. It provides access to research workshops, conferences, mentorship, and support for students interested in applying to academic foundation programmes.

Intercalated Degrees:
Students may choose to undertake an additional intercalated degree (e.g., BSc or MSc) in areas such as Clinical Anatomy or Medical Sciences. This offers deeper engagement in scientific study and hands-on research opportunities.

Research Centre Engagement:
HYMS students have access to several leading research centres, including the Skin Research Centre and the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre. These centres offer opportunities to contribute to active research projects and gain experience with current medical innovations.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Medical graduates in the UK follow a structured career progression pathway after completing their MBBS or equivalent degree. Upon graduation, they enter the Foundation Programme, a two-year paid training period (FY1 and FY2) where they rotate through various specialties to gain broad clinical experience. Successful completion of this leads to full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).

After Foundation Training, doctors choose a specialty and apply for Core or Specialty Training. Core Training typically lasts 2–3 years and is followed by higher Specialty Training, while some fields (like General Practice or Surgery) offer run-through training from the start. Specialty training durations vary—General Practice takes around 3 years, while hospital specialties can take 5–8+ years, depending on the discipline. After completing training, doctors become Consultants in hospital specialties or General Practitioners (GPs).

In terms of further study, many graduates pursue postgraduate qualifications to enhance their expertise or academic profile. Options include:

  • Master’s degrees (e.g., MSc in Public Health, Medical Education, Clinical Research, or Global Health)

  • PhDs or MD(Res) for careers in academia or research

  • Diplomas and Certificates in fields like Tropical Medicine, Radiology, or Dermatology

  • Intercalated BSc or MBPhD programmes (during or after undergraduate studies for research-focused pathways)

This combination of structured clinical training and academic opportunities allows UK-trained doctors to build flexible, rewarding careers in medicine, academia, global health, and beyond.
