Progression & Future Opportunities

Medical graduates in the UK follow a structured career progression pathway after completing their MBBS or equivalent degree. Upon graduation, they enter the Foundation Programme, a two-year paid training period (FY1 and FY2) where they rotate through various specialties to gain broad clinical experience. Successful completion of this leads to full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).

After Foundation Training, doctors choose a specialty and apply for Core or Specialty Training. Core Training typically lasts 2–3 years and is followed by higher Specialty Training, while some fields (like General Practice or Surgery) offer run-through training from the start. Specialty training durations vary—General Practice takes around 3 years, while hospital specialties can take 5–8+ years, depending on the discipline. After completing training, doctors become Consultants in hospital specialties or General Practitioners (GPs).

Additional Information & Requirements

A levels - AAA; including biology (or human biology) and chemistry (a pass is required in science practical tests, where assessed separately). The third A can be in any subject except citizenship studies, critical thinking, general studies and global perspectives. A levels must be taken within two years, At least six GCSEs at grade 7 (A) including biology and chemistry, one of either physics or maths must also be passed to grade 7 (A) with the other being grade 6 (B) and a minimum of grade 6 (B) in English language (double science requirement is 7,7 and triple science is 7,7,7), IELTS 7.5 (no less than 7.0 in any element), Pearson Test of English (Academic) 67 (minimum 55), Certificate of Proficiency in English: Grade B. A pass is required in science practical tests, where these are assessed separately.
IB requirements 34 points overall, including HL6 in biology, HL6 in chemistry, or 6,6,6 in 3 HL Certificates with HL6 in biology, HL6 in chemistry, with GCSEs stated (or equivalent).
Indian - Indian Higher Secondary Certificate (Class XII) CBSE or CISCE Boards: grades 90% and above, including Maharashtra State Board: West Bengal Board 80% and above, and all other boards 95%. (A level - A Grade is considered 90%, B is considered 85%) All requirements for all 10 grades are the same as GCSE requirements.
Nottingham says that, for interview selection, it scores GCSEs and UCAT. It does not score A levels, AS levels or equivalent qualifications as part of the interview-selection score. A-level or IB qualifications still matter because you must meet the entry requirements, but once you meet them, they don't necessarily give you extra ranking points. If you have not taken GCSE, iGCSE or equivalents, you will have only your UCAT score. Your application will not be disadvantaged if we only use your UCAT results. 50 points are awarded for UCAT: 801 and above 10 points, 701 and above 8 points, 601 and above 6 points, 501 - 600 4 points. Verbal reasoning points are doubled. SJT -Band 1 will get 10 points 2 will get 6 and 3 will get 2 points. Band 4 is not accepted. And a maximum of 32 points are awarded for GCSE. 9 or A* gets 4, 8 gets 3, 7 gets 2, and 6 gets 1.
Over the past few years, the Medicine BMBS (A100) course has: had 1,874 to 2,100 home applicants meet the entry criteria had 190 to 327 international applicants meet the entry criteria interviewed 823 to 1219 home applicants interviewed 60 to 96 international applicants made 267 to 642 home offers about 200 places for home students made 28 to 60 international offers (offers can exceed the number of places because not everyone accepts/attends) about 20 places for international students
UCAT test required; applicants who achieve a UCAT SJT grade of Band 4 will not be considered
Interview required (Home applicants in person, International applicants online via Microsoft Teams). Interviews are scheduled for 15 December 2026 to 29 January 2027.

Work experience expected (volunteering in a care related setting, volunteering with disadvantaged groups, or paid employment in a job working with the general public)
Resits for no more than one GCSE subject resit in maths, English language, biology, human biology, chemistry, or double science qualifications. The achieved overall resit grade must be a minimum of Level 6 (B) in maths or English language, and a minimum of Level 7 (A) in biology, human biology, chemistry or double science (7,7) qualifications. Resits for up to two A levels as long as:  you have completed your A levels in the last 12 months you have already obtained at least ABB with at least one A in biology/human biology or chemistry  your achieved resit grades meet AAA and include biology (or human biology) and chemistry 
For graduates: 2:1 honours degree in any subject (A-level Biology at grade B for non-bioscience degrees with insufficient biology content, minimum GCSE Grade 6 (B) or equivalent in maths)
Students who are 17 years old or above are accepted. If under 18, a parent or legal guardian must complete an under 18 consent form
IELTS: 7.5, no less than 7.0 in any element. For A-level students If an applicant has NOT achieved level 6 (Grade B) GCSE English language, we will accept one of the following: • IELTS 7.5 (no less than 7.0 in any element) International Baccalaureate diploma: IB English A1 or A2 at grade 5, IB English B (standard level) at grade 6 or IB English B (higher level) at grade
Deferred applications will be considered for the following year of entry onto the course. If you did not apply for deferred entry initially via UCAS, but subsequently wish to defer after receiving an offer, you must request deferral by 1 May in the year of application. Transfers are not accepted.
Foundation program is available to only domestic students. International students cannot use foundation courses at this university or any other university to transfer onto this course.
