The University of St Andrews offers a unique Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours degree in Medicine, combining in-depth scientific study with early clinical experience during the first three years of medical education.
Programme Structure:
Years 1–3 (Pre-Clinical Phase):
Students complete three years at St Andrews focusing on medical sciences, clinical skills, and professional development. The curriculum integrates anatomy, physiology, pathology, and communication skills, delivered through lectures, labs, small-group tutorials, and early patient contact.
Progression to Clinical Training:
Upon successful completion of the BSc (Hons) Medicine degree, students progress to complete their clinical training at a partner medical school.
For international students, progression is only available to the University of Manchester, where they complete Years 4 to 6 and graduate with an MB ChB degree.

The University of Manchester Medical School delivers extensive clinical training through a large network of teaching hospitals and healthcare facilities across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and the North West of England. This system provides students with a wide range of experiences across specialties and patient populations.
Core Teaching Hospitals
From Year 3 onwards, students are allocated to Clinical Education Campuses (CECs), which are linked to major hospitals:
Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI)
Located on the Oxford Road campus, MRI is a large teaching hospital offering services in emergency medicine, cardiology, nephrology, and organ transplantation.
Wythenshawe Hospital
Based in South Manchester, it specializes in cardiothoracic surgery, respiratory medicine, burns treatment, and breast care. It is also home to the North West Lung Centre.
Salford Royal Hospital
A major trauma center known for neurology, stroke care, and gastrointestinal surgery. It serves a large urban population and houses a rooftop helipad for emergency services.
Royal Preston Hospital
Located in Lancashire, this hospital offers a comprehensive range of services including surgery, emergency medicine, and oncology.
Clinical Experience and Opportunities:
Students begin developing clinical and communication skills from Year 1 through simulated practice and real-world patient interactions in healthcare settings.
Emphasis is placed on professionalism, teamwork, and reflective practice.
Research opportunities are available during the programme, helping students strengthen their understanding of scientific inquiry and evidence-based medicine.
Medical graduates in the UK follow a structured career progression pathway after completing their MBBS or equivalent degree. Upon graduation, they enter the Foundation Programme, a two-year paid training period (FY1 and FY2) where they rotate through various specialties to gain broad clinical experience. Successful completion of this leads to full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
After Foundation Training, doctors choose a specialty and apply for Core or Specialty Training. Core Training typically lasts 2–3 years and is followed by higher Specialty Training, while some fields (like General Practice or Surgery) offer run-through training from the start. Specialty training durations vary—General Practice takes around 3 years, while hospital specialties can take 5–8+ years, depending on the discipline. After completing training, doctors become Consultants in hospital specialties or General Practitioners (GPs).
In terms of further study, many graduates pursue postgraduate qualifications to enhance their expertise or academic profile. Options include:
Master’s degrees (e.g., MSc in Public Health, Medical Education, Clinical Research, or Global Health)
PhDs or MD(Res) for careers in academia or research
Diplomas and Certificates in fields like Tropical Medicine, Radiology, or Dermatology
Intercalated BSc or MBPhD programmes (during or after undergraduate studies for research-focused pathways)
