Over three years, you’ll combine hands-on clinical placements with innovative teaching, helping you grow into a confident, compassionate, and skilled midwife.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Foundations of Midwifery Practice

In your first year, you’ll explore the core principles of midwifery with modules like Scholarly Practice in Midwifery (MID1028), Cultural Perspectives in Midwifery (MID1027), and Foundations of Midwifery Care (MID1025). You’ll start developing practical skills in safe, inclusive care and experience your first clinical learning in simulated and real-world settings.

Year 2 – Developing Skills & Evidence-Based Care

Year two helps you build deeper knowledge and confidence through modules such as Developing Midwifery Care (MID2035), Additional Care Needs Applied to Midwifery (MID2032), and Research in Midwifery (MID2036). You’ll learn to apply legal, ethical, and clinical frameworks to more complex situations while shaping your ability to support mothers, newborns, and families across different care environments.

In your final year, you’ll take on more responsibility and autonomy with modules like Proficiency in Clinical Midwifery Practice (MID3030P), Consolidating Midwifery Care (MID3029), and Independent Project (MID4005). You’ll lead care for a caseload, evaluate service delivery, and complete a project that demonstrates you’re ready for professional practice as a registered midwife.

From the very first year, you’ll gain confidence and practical skills by working in simulated wards and going on placements with real families, supported by the latest digital tools and professional equipment. This mix of simulated practice and real-life experience ensures that when you graduate, you’re ready to step into your role as a compassionate, skilled midwife.

Here’s how your experiential learning will take shape:

  • Midwifery Skills Lab – Practice with birthing mannequins, anatomical models, and equipment to simulate labour, infant care, and neonatal procedures.

  • Clinical Skills Simulation Lab – Experience realistic ward environments, medical equipment, and virtual-reality tools for practising clinical decision-making.

  • Placements with NHS Trusts – Spend time in partner hospitals like Northampton General, Kettering General, and Milton Keynes University Hospital, gaining hands-on experience in maternity, community, and neonatal care.

  • Blended Learning & Digital Tools – Engage in interactive online sessions, group projects, and case studies that let you apply learning in real-time.

  • Learning Hub & Professional Skills Suites – Access the 24/7 library, collaborative study spaces, and dedicated midwifery suites for simulation, reflection, and team learning.
