BSc Hons Midwifery

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Nottingham

Program Overview

The University of Nottingham BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme equips you with the clinical expertise, professional judgment and compassionate mindset to support women, babies and families through pregnancy, birth and beyond. This course suits students who are committed to compassionate care, value hands-on learning and wish to qualify as a midwife and register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:

In your first year you begin with modules like “Foundations of Midwifery Practice”, “Biosciences for Midwifery” and “Introduction to Maternal and Newborn Care”. You’ll work in simulation suites and start clinical placements, developing your understanding of anatomy, physiology and the role of midwifery in global health contexts. From the very first week you begin to build your confidence in caring for women and babies in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal settings.

Year 2:

In the second year you explore more advanced modules such as “Midwifery Practice 2”, “Evidence-Based Midwifery” and “Leadership in Maternity Care”. You’ll alternate between theory blocks and hospital/community placements, deepen your understanding of clinical decision-making and begin to lead segments of care pathways alongside experienced practitioners. This year strengthens both your hands-on practice and your analytical skills in midwifery.

Year 3:

In your final year you engage with modules such as “Consolidated Midwifery Practice”, “Professionalism and Ethics in Midwifery” and a capstone “Midwifery Portfolio & Practice Leadership”. You’ll undertake placements where you assume increasing responsibility, apply your learning to complex care situations and prepare for registration as a midwife. This year positions you fully for professional practice and leadership in midwifery services.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Nottingham BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme you’ll gain practical skills not just in lectures but in real-world healthcare settings, with around 50 % of the programme dedicated to placements. From day one you’ll train in modern clinical-skills suites and then spend extended weeks in hospital wards and community clinics, building confidence and competence in caring for women, babies and families. Here’s how the experience is structured with real-world facilities and practice-based learning:

  • Clinical placements: Students complete over 2,300 hours of practice, across trust sites including Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust and other regional hospitals.

  • Home & away trust structure: In Year 1 you’ll be based at an “away” trust, and in Years 2-3 at a “home” trust — this gives exposure to multiple service-models and ensures readiness for any maternity care setting.

  • Clinical-skills facilities & simulation suites: You’ll train in dedicated facilities – including dissection suites, teaching laboratories and simulation suites at the Medical School (Queen’s Medical Centre).

  • Varied care settings: Placements span hospital antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal wards, community midwifery, neonatal units, theatres and gynaecology wards — helping you gain wide-ranging experience.

  • Library & digital support: The University’s library systems and digital learning platforms back your clinical and academic work, helping you reflect on placements, access clinical resources and prepare professionally.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the University of Nottingham BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme typically move swiftly into frontline midwifery roles such as Registered Midwife, Community Midwife, Caseload/Continuity Midwife or Specialist Midwife (in areas such as antenatal/neonatal or public-health). Because this degree is approved by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), you’ll leave ready for professional registration and career build-up.

Here’s how Nottingham supports your professional journey:

  • University services: The Careers & Employability Service provides specialist midwifery-careers guidance, job application workshops, mentorship networks and opportunities such as the “Dean’s Academic Health Sciences Internship” bridging academic work and clinical practice.

  • Employment stats & salary figures: According to official data, 95 % of recent graduates go into work or further study within 15 months of finishing the course. The average earnings at that stage are around £28,500

  • University–industry partnerships: The programme works in collaboration with four NHS Trusts, ensuring you experience real-world maternity services, continuity of care, and early exposure to varied maternity settings.

  • Long-term accreditation value: The course is approved by the NMC, meaning on graduation you are eligible to register as a midwife and begin your professional career in the UK or internationally.

  • Graduation outcomes: Graduates report high levels of meaningful work (95 % agree their current role uses what they learnt) and are well prepared for clinical roles in midwifery, community health, and advanced practice.
