Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery at the University of Salford is designed for those who are passionate about making a real difference in the lives of birthing people and their families. Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation in midwifery, studying modules such as Accountability, Autonomy and Professionalism 1, Safe and Effective Care 1, Universal Care 1, Additional Care 1, Promoting Excellence 1, and Reflective Practitioner 1. You’ll begin to develop the theoretical basis for safe practice, learning how to apply evidence and act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code.

Year 2:
Your second year deepens your knowledge with modules like Accountability, Autonomy and Professionalism 2, Safe and Effective Care 2, Universal Care 2, Additional Care 2, Promoting Excellence 2, and Reflective Practitioner 2. You’ll take on more responsibility, working in partnership with midwives and other health professionals under supervision, and continue to develop your professional skills and knowledge.

Year 3:
In your final year, you’ll focus on advanced practice and leadership, studying modules such as Safe and Effective Care 3 and Promoting Excellence 3. You’ll use research findings and lessons from data to promote best midwifery policy and practice, and demonstrate advocacy and leadership skills. You’ll provide care for birthing people, their babies, and families, with increasing autonomy and supervision as your skills grow

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Salford, the BSc (Hons) Midwifery program is all about hands-on learning and real-world experience. You’ll spend half your time on clinical placements, working directly with women and families in NHS hospitals, midwifery-led units, and community clinics. • Practice in dedicated clinical skills rooms and simulation suites, including a birth simulation suite, home birth room, and breastfeeding manikins

• Use of advanced simulation technology like Lucina (maternal and fetal simulation system) and immersive suite for realistic clinical scenarios

• Group projects and case studies to develop teamwork and problem-solving skills

• Access to specialist midwifery libraries and digital resources for research and study

• Field trips and visits to partner healthcare providers, exposing you to diverse patient populations

• Use of digital tools for scenario-based learning and assessment, including the MORA (Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement) for tracking clinical proficiencies

• No mandatory internships, but all students complete extensive clinical placements as part of the course
