3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of the West of England

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery at University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) delivers a professionally-approved midwifery qualification combining real clinical placements with strong academic foundations—perfect if you’re passionate about supporting women, babies and families throughout pregnancy and birth. You’ll study the full spectrum of midwifery practice in birth-units, communities and hospitals, developing the skills to practise confidently, compassionately and at the highest standard.

Curriculum structure

Year 1

In your first year, you’ll engage with modules such as The Context of Midwifery Practice 1, Holistic Midwifery Practice 1 and The Midwife as a Skilled Practitioner 1. You’ll build your foundation in anatomy, physiology and professional midwifery roles, while starting clinical contact through observed practice in partnership settings.

Year 2

The second year advances your skills through modules like The Context of Midwifery Practice 3 & 4, Holistic Midwifery Practice 3 & 4 and The Midwife as a Skilled Practitioner 2. You’ll be placed for longer periods in maternity, neonatal and community settings, taking more responsibility and bridging theory with complexity in real-life care.

Year 3

In your final year you’ll complete modules such as Holistic Midwifery Practice 5 & 6, Promoting Excellence for Midwifery Practice and The Midwife as a Skilled Practitioner 3. You’ll lead midwifery episodes, integrate evidence into practice, coordinate care across settings and prepare for full registration as a midwife.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the BSc (Hons) Midwifery at University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), you’ll gain practical midwifery experience both on-campus and in real healthcare settings so you’re ready to step into practice with confidence. The teaching environment includes a purpose-built Skills & Simulation Centre and a “birth room” at the Glenside Campus, giving you opportunities to practise authentic scenarios before and during your clinical placements.

Here’s how your hands-on learning works:

  • **Skills & Simulation Centre at Glenside Campus ** — The healthcare facilities include hospital-ward simulation suites, a birth-room simulation environment, and a fully-equipped simulation house so you build experience in safe, realistic settings.

  • Clinical placements (≈ 50% of learning time) — You’ll spend around half the programme in clinical placement across South-West region maternity, hospital and community services, working with mentors in real midwifery settings.

  • Mentored practice and inter-professional learning — You’ll engage with practicing midwives, service users, healthcare teams and simulation scenarios, helping you bridge theory and practice in a team environment.

  • Assessment and feedback embedded in practice — Your simulated and placement experiences are supported by structured debriefs, reflective portfolios and integration of clinical skills before you go into real practice.
