Curriculum Structure:

In Year 1, you will build a solid foundation in midwifery by studying modules such as “Introduction to Midwifery,” “Anatomy and Physiology,” and “Professional Practice.” This year focuses on developing your understanding of pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care alongside essential communication and professional skills.

Year 2 deepens your clinical knowledge through “Midwifery Practice,” “Complex Care,” and “Critical Care of the Newborn,” preparing you for managing risk factors related to pregnancy, labor, and newborn health, with increased clinical placement experience.

In Year 3, you will focus on leadership, emergency management, and preparation for professional registration, studying modules like “Preparation for Registered Practice,” “Global Midwifery,” and “Family and Lifestyle Needs,” alongside advanced clinical placements to hone your decision-making and independent practice skills.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students gain invaluable practical skills through extensive clinical placements integral to the program. These placements, lasting approximately 22 weeks each year, occur in partnership with leading NHS Trust maternity units, providing hands-on experience in real-world healthcare settings. Alongside supervised clinical practice, students benefit from state-of-the-art simulation facilities and expert-led workshops that enhance their learning and confidence before entering the workforce.

Specifically, experiential learning includes:

• 22 planned practice placement weeks annually at NHS Trust hospitals such as Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea and St Mary’s Hospitals, offering exposure to diverse maternity care environments

• Access to advanced simulation suites that replicate clinical scenarios for safe skills practice

• Engagement with digital tools supporting patient care and clinical recording systems used within the NHS

• Participation in multidisciplinary team projects and case scenario exercises to foster teamwork and clinical decision-making

• Observation and involvement in real midwifery cases under expert supervision, enhancing practical judgment and empathy

• Use of university resources including well-equipped health sciences libraries and learning centers dedicated to healthcare education
