This four-year programme is designed to support students from a range of academic backgrounds, combining hands-on experience with academic learning so you’ll graduate confident, capable, and ready to register as a professional adult nurse in the UK or abroad.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year:
Your foundation year gives you a solid starting point for degree-level study. You’ll explore modules like Core Maths, Biology: Physiology, Preparing for a Career in Caring, and Health and Wellbeing. This year helps you build essential knowledge, develop communication and teamwork skills, and gain the confidence you’ll need for your nursing degree.

Year 1:
In your first year, you’ll start applying theory to practice. Modules like Foundations of Communication and Professionalism for Nursing, Fundamental Skills and Procedures for Nursing, and Applied Health Science for Nursing Across the Lifespan help you learn how to care for patients, understand the science behind health, and begin developing core nursing skills. You’ll also study Contemporary Nursing Practice 1 and Epidemiology, Inequality and Health Promotion, giving you insight into public health and person-centred care.

Year 2:
In year two, you’ll take on more responsibility and spend more time in clinical placements. Through modules like Supporting a Patient Safety Culture in Nursing, Assessing and Planning Care Across the Lifespan, and Coordinating and Leading Integrated Care in Interprofessional Settings, you’ll learn how to assess patients holistically, work closely with healthcare teams, and begin leading aspects of patient care with confidence.

Year 3:
Your final year is about bringing everything together and preparing for professional practice. Modules such as Clinical Decision Making in the Acutely Unwell Adult, Personalised Care and Public Health in Adult Nursing, and Managing the Care of Adults with Complex Care Needs help you refine your clinical judgement and leadership. You’ll also complete Contemporary Adult Nursing Practice 3 and Leading and Managing Quality Care, ensuring you’re ready to step into your first nursing role with confidence.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Anglia Ruskin University, studying Adult Nursing isn’t just about lectures or textbooks — it’s about doing nursing from day one. You’ll get hands-on experience in purpose-built skills labs that feel just like real hospital wards and community clinics, using authentic healthcare equipment and practising essential skills in a safe, supportive environment. From your very first year, you’ll also spend time on clinical placements with NHS healthcare teams, where you can apply what you’ve learned with real patients while being guided by experienced nurses. On top of that, ARU uses innovative virtual simulations, letting you practise decision-making and teamwork in lifelike digital scenarios before heading into placement.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Purpose-built nursing skills labs – practise core procedures, patient care, and communication in realistic ward-style settings.

  • Real healthcare equipment – learn on the tools and technology you’ll actually use in clinical practice.

  • Clinical placements with NHS trusts – gain hands-on experience in hospitals, community clinics, and care settings, guided by qualified nurses.

  • Virtual simulated placement learning (Ruskin Row) – strengthen your clinical reasoning and teamwork through immersive digital scenarios.

  • Group practice and peer learning – collaborate with fellow students to solve problems, communicate effectively, and build confidence together.

  • Experienced practitioners as mentors – learn from registered nurses and healthcare professionals who bring real-world insights into every session.
