Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year (if enrolled with foundation option)

The foundation year helps you build the academic and health-science skills needed to succeed in degree-level nursing. You’ll explore subjects like Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology and Disease, Professional Practice, and Health and Wellbeing, giving you a solid grounding before you start more specialised learning-disabilities nursing modules.

Year 1

In your first degree year, you begin developing core nursing skills and professional identity. Modules such as Becoming a Professional Practitioner, Evidence: Your Profession in a Global Context, Nursing Assessment and Care Delivery, and Understanding Influences on Health and Care introduce you to patient assessment, child and adult care basics, and how social and environmental factors influence health. Early placements (Placement 1: Introduction to Nursing Care and Placement 2: Delivering Nursing Care) give you supervised experience applying your learning in real-world care settings.

Year 2

Second-year study deepens your knowledge and confidence in providing tailored care. Modules like Therapeutic Interventions and Innovations in Learning Disabilities Nursing, Complex Decision-Making in Learning Disabilities Environments, and Enhanced Approaches in Delivering Holistic Care teach you to plan and deliver sensitive, personalised care. Placements (Placement 3: Delivering Enhanced Nursing Care and Placement 4: Delivering Complex Holistic Nursing Care) allow you to put these skills into practice in hospitals, community care, and specialist learning-disabilities services.

Year 3

Your final year prepares you to graduate ready for professional practice. Modules such as Complex Care Coordination in Learning Disabilities Nursing, Leading for the Future as a Health and Care Professional, The Evidence-Based Practitioner: Professional Project, and Preparing for your Career in Nursing focus on managing complex care, leading teams, making evidence-based decisions, and reflecting on your learning. Final placements (Placement 5: Coordinating Nursing Care and Placement 6: Practising Autonomously) give you extensive hands-on experience under supervision so you can transition confidently into practice.

Focus areas: learning-disabilities nursing, holistic care, therapeutic interventions, complex care coordination, professional practice, patient-centred care.
Learning outcomes: assess, plan, and deliver safe, compassionate care for individuals with learning disabilities; provide therapeutic and holistic interventions; make clinical decisions in complex situations; coordinate care across multidisciplinary teams; practice professionally and independently.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Approved by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), allowing registration as a learning-disabilities nurse in the UK.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Coventry, Learning Disabilities Nursing is all about learning by doing. From day one, you’ll combine classroom study with hands-on practice in realistic simulation environments and real-world placements, helping you build confidence, practical skills, and the empathy you need to support people with learning disabilities. You’ll experience a wide variety of care settings — from hospitals and community services to home-based support — so that by the time you graduate, you’re ready to make a real difference.

Here’s how your hands-on learning comes to life:

  • Simulation and practice suites in the Alison Gingell Building: Train in hospital-style wards, mock operating theatres, therapy suites, and community house settings to practise skills safely before working with real patients.

  • High-fidelity mannequins and medical equipment: Practice clinical skills like patient assessment, medication administration, and emergency care on realistic mannequins that respond like real patients.

  • Patient-pathway simulations and role-play: Experience complete care journeys — from ambulance to hospital to home — so you understand the full picture of supporting someone with learning disabilities.

  • Extensive placements in real-world settings: Complete six placements in hospitals, community care services, care homes, and home-based care, applying your skills under the guidance of experienced supervisors.

  • Support services and digital tools: Access placement supervisors, success coaches, online resources, and academic support to help you balance study, practice, and personal development effectively.
