Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year

The foundation year is all about getting you ready for degree-level nursing. You’ll explore Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology and Disease, Introduction to Professional Practice, and Health and Wellbeing, giving you a strong understanding of the human body, basic healthcare principles, and professional expectations. This year ensures you feel confident and prepared before you start more specialized learning.

Year 1

Your first official degree year focuses on developing core nursing skills and your professional identity. Modules like Becoming a Professional Practitioner, Evidence: Your Profession in a Global Context, Nursing Assessment and Care Delivery, and Understanding Influences on Health and Care teach you how to assess patients, deliver basic care, and understand the social and environmental factors that affect wellbeing. You’ll also start real-world placements, gaining hands-on experience under supervision in healthcare settings.

Year 2

Year two deepens your skills in caring for people with learning disabilities. Modules such as Therapeutic Interventions and Innovations in Learning Disabilities Nursing, Complex Decision-Making in Learning Disabilities Nursing, and Enhanced Approaches in Holistic Care show you how to design and deliver care that meets individual needs. Placements give you the opportunity to apply these skills in hospitals, community settings, and specialist services, working directly with patients and multidisciplinary teams.

Year 3

In your final year, you’ll prepare to graduate as a confident, competent learning-disabilities nurse. Modules like Complex Care Coordination, Leading for the Future as a Health and Care Professional, The Evidence-Based Practitioner: Professional Project, and Preparing for your Career in Nursing teach you to manage complex care, make evidence-informed decisions, and step into professional practice. Extensive final placements allow you to practise independently while still being supported, so you’re ready to enter the workforce.

Focus areas: learning-disabilities care, holistic health and wellbeing, therapeutic interventions, care coordination, professional nursing practice.
Learning outcomes: plan and deliver safe, evidence-based care, make complex clinical decisions, coordinate care across services, work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Approved by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) for registration as a learning-disabilities nurse.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Coventry, Learning Disabilities Nursing is all about learning by doing. From day one, you’ll combine classroom study with hands-on practice in realistic simulation environments and real-world placements, helping you build confidence, practical skills, and the empathy you need to support people with learning disabilities. You’ll experience a wide variety of care settings — from hospitals and community services to home-based support — so that by the time you graduate, you’re ready to make a real difference.

Here’s how your hands-on learning comes to life:

  • Simulation and practice suites in the Alison Gingell Building: Train in hospital-style wards, mock operating theatres, therapy suites, and community house settings to practise skills safely before working with real patients.

  • High-fidelity mannequins and medical equipment: Practice clinical skills like patient assessment, medication administration, and emergency care on realistic mannequins that respond like real patients.

  • Patient-pathway simulations and role-play: Experience complete care journeys — from ambulance to hospital to home — so you understand the full picture of supporting someone with learning disabilities.

  • Extensive placements in real-world settings: Complete six placements in hospitals, community care services, care homes, and home-based care, applying your skills under the guidance of experienced supervisors.

  • Support services and digital tools: Access placement supervisors, success coaches, online resources, and academic support to help you balance study, practice, and personal development effectively.
