3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Nottingham Trent University

Program Overview

NTU’s BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) is designed for people who genuinely want to make a difference in the lives of others, helping individuals manage mental-health challenges with compassion, skill and confidence. Throughout the course, you’ll blend hands-on clinical experience with supportive, high-quality teaching that prepares you to become a knowledgeable, reflective, and practice-ready mental-health nurse.

Curriculum structure

Year One
Your first year gives you the foundations you’ll build your whole nursing career on. Through modules like Introduction to Nursing Practice, Integrative Nursing Practice, and Foundations of Applied Nursing Practice, you’ll explore what it really means to care for someone — from essential clinical skills to therapeutic communication and understanding the factors that shape a person’s wellbeing. Your first Practice Assessment also introduces you to real clinical environments, helping you grow in confidence early on.

Year Two
In your second year, you’ll start connecting theory to more complex, real-world scenarios. With modules such as Evidence in Nursing Practice, Biopsychosocial Approaches in Nursing Practice, and Applied Nursing Practice in Complex Care, you’ll learn how research, physiology, psychology and social context all work together in mental-health care. It’s a year where you begin to feel the shift from beginner to developing practitioner, supported by another Practice Assessment to help you reflect on your progress.

Final Year
Your final year is all about becoming a capable, independent nurse who’s ready for the responsibility of professional practice. You’ll study Innovating and Improving Healthcare Practice, Leadership in Nursing, and Managing Applied Nursing Care, giving you the tools to lead, advocate for patients, and help shape better care. Your final Practice Assessment brings everything together, preparing you for the transition into your first role as a registered mental-health nurse.

Focus areas
Supportive mental-health care across the lifespan; therapeutic communication; holistic and person-centred practice; biopsychosocial understanding of health; evidence-based care; leadership and professional nursing skills.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to deliver safe, compassionate, evidence-based mental-health care, communicate confidently with people in distress, understand the biological, psychological and social factors affecting wellbeing, and step into the NHS or other healthcare roles as a prepared and thoughtful professional.

Professional alignment (accreditation)
The degree meets the standards required for professional registration and includes all the clinical placement hours you need to qualify as a mental-health nurse.

Reputation (employability rankings)
NTU has a strong reputation for graduate employability and is recognised for high-quality health and social-care teaching, giving students a strong start in the job market.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the best things about studying Mental Health Nursing at NTU is how quickly you get to apply what you learn. From your very first year, you’ll spend time in modern, purpose-built healthcare training facilities and on real clinical placements, so you can build your confidence step by step. NTU’s teaching spaces are designed to feel like real hospital and community environments, helping you practise everything from communication to hands-on clinical care in a safe, supportive setting.

As you move through the course, your learning becomes more immersive — with simulated clinical scenarios, dedicated skills practice, and plenty of time out in professional settings. And because NTU works closely with local NHS trusts, you’ll experience a wide mix of mental-health services and meet people with diverse needs and backgrounds.

Here’s how those experiences come to life throughout your degree:

  • Purpose-built Health and Allied Professions Centre, equipped specifically for nursing training.

  • Mock hospital wards where you can practise assessments, care planning, teamwork, and safe clinical decision-making.

  • A GP-style consultation suite, giving you space to develop therapeutic communication skills for one-to-one mental-health work.

  • A virtual-reality teaching wall that places you inside realistic care environments and interactive learning scenarios.

  • Clinical placements that make up 50% of the course, giving you hands-on experience in NHS mental-health services, community teams, inpatient units, and specialist support settings.

  • Practice Assessments each year, helping you steadily grow from beginner to confident practitioner with structured reflection and feedback.

  • Teaching that includes input from real service users and carers, so you understand mental health care from the perspective of those who have lived it.

  • Access to NTU’s libraries and study spaces, supporting your academic growth with health-specific resources, journals and digital tools.
