BSc Hons Nursing in Adult

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Robert Gordon University

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Nursing – Adult degree at RGU prepares you to become a fully qualified adult nurse, caring for people aged 16 and over across a wide range of health settings. It’s perfect for anyone who is compassionate, curious about adult health, and wants a career where you make a real difference in people’s lives every day.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
You’ll start by building a solid foundation with modules such as Health & Wellbeing Across the Lifespan, Fundamentals of Nursing Practice, and Essential Skills for Initial Nursing Practice. You’ll learn the basics of anatomy, physiology, and professional values, while gaining hands-on experience in safe, compassionate patient care.

Year 2:
This year helps you connect theory with real-world practice. Through modules like Nursing Care – Decision Making and Developing Nursing Practice, you’ll tackle more complex patient needs, refine your assessment skills, and start working more independently under supervision.

Year 3:
Now you’ll focus on leadership, research, and integrating your skills across different care settings. Modules such as Management, Leadership & Research Skills in Health Care will help you develop confidence in decision-making, care planning, and working autonomously as a nurse.

Year 4:
Your honours year is about consolidating everything you’ve learned. You’ll complete a dissertation, focus on acute and unscheduled care, and demonstrate your readiness to practise as a fully registered adult nurse.

Focus areas: adult nursing across the lifespan, person-centred whole-person care, acute, community and long-term care settings

Learning outcomes: graduate with the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours to deliver safe, compassionate, evidence-informed care; work effectively in multidisciplinary teams; practise confidently as a registered adult nurse

Professional alignment (accreditation): Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) — eligible for registration as a nurse in the adult field upon graduation

Reputation (employability rankings): Ranked Top in Scotland for Nursing and Midwifery (Mail University Guide 2025) and 2nd in Scotland for graduate prospects in Nursing (The Times & The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026)

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At RGU, learning goes far beyond lectures. From day one, you’ll be building real-world nursing skills in both simulated and actual healthcare environments, so you graduate ready to step confidently into your role as a registered adult nurse. You’ll practise in purpose-built simulation suites, work with volunteer patients, and spend a large portion of your time on placements in hospitals, community services, and long-term care settings, combining hands-on experience with the academic knowledge you gain in class.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical experience and make your learning come alive:

  • Clinical placements from Year 1: You’ll spend up to 50% of your time in real healthcare settings, including hospital wards, community care, and long-term care services across Grampian, Highland, Orkney, and Shetland.

  • Simulation & Clinical Skills Centre: Practise procedures safely using high-fidelity equipment and realistic scenarios, from ward care to home visits.

  • Blended learning environment: Lectures, seminars, workshops, and online resources via Moodle support your learning both on campus and during placements.

  • Teamwork in real healthcare settings: Collaborate with doctors, physiotherapists, social workers, and other professionals, experiencing firsthand how multidisciplinary teams deliver adult care.

  • International learning opportunities: Later in your studies, you may have the chance to observe nursing practice overseas, gaining a broader perspective on adult healthcare delivery.
