BSc Nursing in Mental Health

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Robert Gordon University

Program Overview

The BN Nursing – Mental Health degree at Robert Gordon University (RGU) is designed for students who want to make a real difference in people’s lives. You’ll learn how to support individuals coping with mental health challenges while developing the confidence and clinical skills to become a compassionate and professional nurse.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
Your journey begins with the foundations of nursing and healthcare. You’ll explore modules such as Professional Values in Nursing, Health and Wellbeing Across the Lifespan, and Practice Learning 1. These subjects help you understand how mental health impacts physical and emotional wellbeing and teach you the fundamentals of safe, person-centred care.

Year 2:
You’ll build on your knowledge and start applying it to real-world scenarios. Modules like Applying Knowledge and Skills for Nursing Care and Developing Professional Practice will help you connect theory with practice as you learn to assess, plan and deliver effective mental health care in both community and hospital settings.

Year 3:
In your final year, you’ll refine your clinical and leadership skills through modules such as Working Autonomously in Mental Health Nursing and Enhancing Practice through Research and Leadership. You’ll focus on managing complex patient needs, leading care teams, and preparing for registration as a qualified mental health nurse.

Focus areas: mental health across the lifespan, therapeutic communication, clinical and community nursing, leadership in care

Learning outcomes: gain the professional skills, knowledge, and confidence to deliver compassionate, evidence-based mental health care, work effectively within healthcare teams, and practise independently as a registered nurse

Professional alignment (accreditation): Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), allowing you to register and practise as a qualified Mental Health Nurse upon graduation.

Reputation (employability rankings): RGU is ranked Top in Scotland for Nursing and Midwifery (The Times & The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025) and recognised nationally for strong graduate employability and hands-on clinical preparation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At RGU, learning goes far beyond the classroom. From the very first year, you’ll be out on placement in hospitals, community services, and social care settings, working alongside experienced nurses and healthcare teams. On campus, you’ll also train in the Clinical Skills Centre and simulation suites, practising real-life scenarios with volunteer patients and high-fidelity equipment. This mix of hands-on placements, simulated experiences, and classroom learning helps you build confidence, professional skills, and the readiness to succeed in mental health nursing.

Here’s what your practical learning will involve:

  • Clinical placements from Year 1: Spend significant time in real healthcare settings—hospital wards, community services, and social care environments across Grampian, Highland, Orkney, and Shetland—applying what you learn in a real-world context.

  • Simulation & skills labs: Practise interventions safely with volunteer patients and realistic scenarios, from ward to home-care settings.

  • Blended learning environment: A combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials, and online resources via Moodle helps you reinforce skills and knowledge both on and off campus.

  • Teamwork experience: Collaborate with doctors, social workers, pharmacists, and other professionals to understand how multidisciplinary teams deliver mental health care.

  • Global perspective: Later-year opportunities may include exchange visits to partner institutions abroad, letting you observe different models of mental health care and broaden your experience.
