BSc Hons Adult Nursing

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Northampton

Program Overview

Year 1 – Building Your Foundation as a Nurse

Your first year focuses on discovering who you are as a future nurse and understanding what safe, compassionate care looks like in real practice. Through modules like Discovering My Identity as a Nurse (NPR1027) and Professionalism and Public Protection in Nursing (NPR1028), you’ll learn essential communication, ethical decision-making, and the scientific basics behind adult health. This year sets the tone for your confidence in both classroom and clinical environments.

Year 2 – Deepening Clinical Skills & Evidence-Based Thinking

In your second year, you start applying what you’ve learned to more complex adult-care situations. Modules such as Constructing and Developing My Nursing Identity (NPR2067) and Interpreting the Evidence Base Influencing Adult Nursing (NPR2069) help you strengthen your clinical judgement and understand the research that shapes safe nursing practice. You’ll also spend more time in placements, building confidence in real healthcare settings.

Year 3 – Leadership, Independence & Becoming a Registered Nurse

Your final year focuses on stepping into the role of a soon-to-be Registered Nurse. With modules like Developing My Nurse Identity Towards Becoming a Registrant (NPR3035) and Leading and Coordinating Adult Nursing Care (NPR3038P), you’ll learn to lead teams, coordinate patient care, and take on more responsibility in clinical practice. By the end of this year, you’ll be fully prepared for NMC registration and professional employment.

The degree is fully approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which means successful graduates are eligible to register and work as Adult Nurses anywhere in the UK.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

Northampton is recognised for strong student satisfaction and quality of teaching in general nursing, and the programme offers excellent clinical placement opportunities through NHS partners.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Studying Adult Nursing at Northampton means you won’t just learn about nursing — you’ll actually live it from day one. You’ll spend a lot of time in the university’s clinical skills suites, practising everything from communication to complex care on lifelike mannequins before stepping into real wards. By the time you start your placements, you’ll already feel grounded and confident, because you’ve rehearsed real scenarios in a safe, supportive environment.

And once you’re out on placement, you’ll rotate through hospitals, community teams and social-care settings across Northamptonshire, working side-by-side with registered nurses. It’s hands-on learning every single week, and the university supports you all the way through with tools, mentors and structured feedback.

Here’s what that practical learning really looks like:

  • A full simulated ward with high-tech mannequins that mimic real patients — perfect for practising everything from taking observations to responding to emergencies.

  • A digital portfolio system (PebblePad) where you record skills, reflect on your progress and prepare for professional assessments.

  • Over 2,300 hours of clinical placement experience, giving you real exposure to NHS trusts, GP surgeries, community health teams and specialist care providers.

  • The chance to join the European Nursing Module (ENM) — a short international placement in one of 24 partner countries, letting you experience healthcare from a global perspective.

  • Regular simulation-based workshops woven into each year of the course, so you keep building and refreshing your clinical confidence.
