3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re passionate about supporting people with learning disabilities and want to make a real difference in their lives, the BSc (Hons) Learning Disability Nursing at the University of Northampton is designed for you. Over three years, you’ll combine classroom learning, hands-on practice, and professional placements to become a confident, fully qualified Learning Disability Nurse ready to work across all ages.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1 – Foundations and Professional Identity
Your first year is about discovering what it means to be a nurse specialising in learning disabilities. Modules like Discovering My Identity as a Nurse (NPR1027), Guided Participation in Nursing Care (NPR1031P), and Professionalism and Public Protection in Nursing (NPR1028) help you build essential communication, ethical, and practical skills. You’ll also start using simulation labs to practise safe and effective care.
Year 2 – Developing Clinical Skills and Evidence-Based Practice
In year two, you’ll expand your knowledge and focus on learning-disability-specific care through modules such as Constructing and Developing My Nursing Identity (NPR2067), Applying Understanding of Nursing Professionalism and Protection of the Public in Nursing (NPR2068), and Interpreting the Evidence Base Influencing Learning Disability Nursing (NPR2071). Community and hospital placements allow you to apply your learning in real-world settings while refining your clinical decision-making.
Year 3 – Leadership, Autonomy, and Specialist Care
Your final year prepares you for registration and advanced practice. Modules like Developing My Nurse Identity Towards Becoming a Registrant (NPR3035), Demonstrating Competence and Confidence in Safe, Effective Administration and Optimisation of Medicines (NPR3037), and Leading and Coordinating Learning Disability Nursing Care (NPR3040P) guide you in leading care, coordinating teams, and handling complex cases, ensuring you graduate ready to practise autonomously.
