BSc (Hons) Midwifery

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Central Lancashire

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about supporting women, birthing people, and families through pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood, this three-year course is designed for you. You’ll learn the full spectrum of midwifery care—from anatomy and physiology to labour, delivery, and postnatal support—while gaining hands-on experience in real healthcare settings.

Curriculum Structure:

  • Year 1: You’ll start by building a strong foundation in midwifery. Modules like Anatomy and Physiology for Midwifery Practice introduce essential knowledge, while practical sessions in the Midwifery and Neonatal Lab / Home Birth Simulation Flat give you a safe space to develop your hands-on skills.

  • Year 2: This year focuses on more complex areas of midwifery, such as complications in pregnancy and neonatal assessment. You’ll spend more time on clinical placements, applying what you’ve learned to real-life care situations.

  • Year 3: In your final year, you’ll consolidate your skills and take on greater responsibility during both simulated and real placements. You’ll finish ready for professional registration as a midwife, confident and capable to work independently in maternity services.

Focus areas: Woman-centred maternity care, pregnancy & birth across the lifespan, neonatal and postnatal health, inter-professional teamwork, clinical simulation, evidence-based midwifery practice.

Learning outcomes: Graduates will provide safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care to women, birthing people, and families, be prepared for registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council, work independently and collaboratively in maternity services, and apply leadership and research skills in midwifery practice.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Fully aligned with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards, allowing graduates to register as professional midwives.

Reputation (employability rankings): UCLan’s midwifery programme is ranked 1st in the UK for overall student positivity in the 2025 Guardian League Table among midwifery providers.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

When you study this programme, you won’t just be sitting in lectures—you’ll be learning by doing. From the very beginning, you’ll spend time in UCLan’s dedicated Midwifery & Neonatal Suite, practising birth and newborn scenarios on advanced manikins and using simulation software. You’ll also complete real placements across local NHS hospitals and community settings, giving you first-hand experience in maternity, birth, and postnatal care so that you graduate confident and ready to work.

Here’s how your hands-on learning comes alive:

  • Midwifery & Neonatal Suite / Simulation Labs – practise realistic birth and newborn care scenarios with high-fidelity manikins like SimMom and SimNewB, birthing beds, and neonatal simulators.

  • Clinical Placements with NHS Trusts – spend around 50% of your time in hospitals and community settings with partner trusts such as Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

  • Digital & Immersive Tools – experience virtual reality, interactive graphics, telemedicine, and home-birthing simulation flats to prepare for diverse midwifery situations.

  • Student Midwifery Society & Peer Events – join conferences, study days, peer-led activities, and charitable events to connect with fellow students and learn beyond the classroom.

  • Reflection and “Keeping in Touch” Days – during placement blocks, take time to reflect on your experiences and link them to your studies, helping you grow as a professional midwife.
