Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Derby, learning to be an adult nurse is all about doing, not just listening. From the very start, you’ll gain hands-on experience in realistic, professional environments that help you build confidence and clinical skills before stepping into real-life practice. You’ll use advanced simulation suites, mock hospital wards, and digital tools to connect what you learn in class with practical patient care:

  • Clinical Skills Suites — practise in replica wards, treatment rooms, and counselling spaces using artificial patients to safely build your skills.

  • Immersive Simulation Suite — experience complex scenarios using VR and interactive 3D technology, preparing you for real-world challenges.

  • Practice Placements — around 50% of your programme is spent in adult nursing settings, giving you hands-on experience with real patients across hospitals and community care.

  • Digital Learning Tools — modules are supported through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) with online tutorials, recorded lectures, and technology-enhanced learning.

  • Inter-professional Learning — collaborate with students from other healthcare disciplines to develop teamwork and communication skills essential for modern nursing practice.
